Tuchel's England Defence Hierarchy: Maguire Ranks Fifth Despite Solid Display

England manager Thomas Tuchel has delivered a significant blow to Harry Maguire's World Cup aspirations, firmly stating the Manchester United defender remains at least the fifth-choice centre-back in his national team plans. This assessment comes despite Maguire's polished and commanding performance during Friday's 1-1 friendly draw with Uruguay, which marked his first appearance under the German coach's leadership.

A Strong Return to International Duty

Maguire, who captained the side during the second half, appeared to have strengthened his case for inclusion in the squad travelling to North America this summer. His display was characterised by the solid, reliable defending that has defined much of his England career. Tuchel acknowledged the defender's specific strengths, praising his composure on the ball, aerial dominance, and threat from set-pieces.

"I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central defender play," Tuchel said. "That's what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and a weapon for set-pieces."

The Established Pecking Order

However, the manager was unequivocal about the current hierarchy within his defensive ranks. He explicitly named four players he currently views as ahead of the 31-year-old Maguire.

  • Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi are firmly established as preferred options.
  • Trevoh Chalobah, despite currently being injured, is considered to have a "slightly ahead" profile in terms of mobility.
  • John Stones retains his status, with Tuchel describing the Manchester City player as "world class" and having significant "credit in the bank."

"I haven't changed my mind but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile," Tuchel explained, confirming the pecking order is no secret within the camp.

Stones' Injury Concerns and Exceptional Status

The situation surrounding John Stones adds another layer of complexity. The defender missed the Uruguay match after feeling his calf in training, continuing a frustrating period plagued by injuries. He has managed just five club appearances since the November international break, severely limiting his match fitness.

Despite this lack of playing time, Tuchel indicated he might make an exception for Stones due to his unparalleled game intelligence and proven quality. "The exception of the rule means that he does not start a lot," Tuchel conceded. "I can see that because I'm a big fan and I know what he brings to the team in terms of personality, attitude and quality game understanding." The manager stressed, however, that any player attending the World Cup must be fit.

Maguire's Tournament Role and Future

While not currently in the starting frame, Tuchel did outline a potential specialist role for Maguire in a tournament setting, particularly in knockout football. He highlighted the defender's potential importance when defending a lead or chasing a game with crosses, long throw-ins, and set-pieces.

When pressed on whether Maguire would be in the squad if it had to be named immediately, Tuchel remained non-committal, focusing on the positive aspects of the defender's recent performance. "He did a good game. He did what he does for Man United. He did it straight away. I'm very happy with him," Tuchel stated, while reiterating that his overall assessment had not shifted.

The coming months will be crucial for Maguire as he seeks to change his manager's mind before the final squad selection for the World Cup in North America.
