Tuchel Compares Kane to Messi and Ronaldo After England's Defeat to Japan
England's World Cup preparations suffered a significant setback as they fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Japan at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night. The match highlighted the team's struggles in the absence of their captain, Harry Kane, who missed the friendly due to a sore foot sustained in training.
Manager Admits There Is No Replacement for Kane
Head coach Thomas Tuchel did not mince words after the match, explicitly stating that England have no direct substitute for Kane. He went even further by drawing comparisons between the striker and two of football's greatest ever players, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
"Why would Argentina not rely on Messi or Portugal on Ronaldo?" Tuchel said in his post-match comments. "Key figures left camp and we saw that a bit. There is no second Harry Kane. Bayern Munich in the absence of Harry Kane has not the same threat, no team in the world has the same threat, it's just normal."
Tuchel emphasised that while England can win matches without their talismanic captain, it is undoubtedly more challenging. "We can win games without Harry, we will win without Harry, we have won without Harry. It's easier to win matches with Harry," he conceded.
Experimentation Fails to Deliver for England
In Kane's absence, Tuchel experimented with a fluid front four, deploying Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Anthony Gordon. However, the system failed to ignite England's attack, with the team lacking creativity and failing to score against a disciplined Japanese side.
Tuchel analysed the performance, noting a tactical shift at halftime. "Today in the first half we played way too narrow. Second half we had more width, we were more dynamic on the wings, using the full-backs more, we took more risks and we made more chances but couldn't convert," he explained.
This match followed a draw with Uruguay last Friday, where Tuchel had tried a more conventional approach with Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin leading the line. Neither strategy proved successful in compensating for Kane's absence.
Injury Crisis Compounds England's Problems
The friendly against Japan was not just about missing Kane. Tuchel was also without several other key players, including Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, John Stones, Reece James, and Bukayo Saka. This created a significant selection headache for the manager during this final camp before the World Cup squad announcement.
Despite the disappointing result and performance, Tuchel suggested the matches had provided valuable insights. He stated they had given him "more clarity" over who to select in his final 26-man squad for the upcoming tournament.
When questioned specifically about the performances of forwards like Palmer and Foden, Tuchel was frank, indicating that England's attacking players had not offered enough in the final third during the match. The defeat leaves serious questions about England's goal threat and tactical flexibility heading into a major competition, heavily reliant on the fitness and form of their star captain, Harry Kane.
