Wrexham AFC and their Hollywood owners face a significant January decision as the future of star striker Paul Mullin hangs in the balance. The 31-year-old forward, currently on a season-long loan at League One side Wigan Athletic, could be set for an early return to the Racecourse Ground.
Loan Spell in Jeopardy After Squad Omissions
The situation escalated after Mullin was left out of Wigan's squad for their last two League One matches. Wigan manager Ryan Lowe has addressed the absences, stating the matter is being handled "in-house" and confirming that both Mullin and fellow loanee Ollie Cooper remain with the Latics "until instructed otherwise."
Speaking to Wigan Today, Lowe was guarded, saying: "There's nothing to say at the moment. When there is, we will give you that. I know people will draw their own conclusions, but all that is in-house stuff." He added that discussions would be held in the New Year and explicitly noted that neither player is injured.
A Wrexham Legend's Uncertain Path
Paul Mullin's status at Wrexham is iconic. He was instrumental in the club's historic back-to-back promotions from the National League to the Championship, scoring 110 goals in four campaigns. His popularity transcended the pitch, featuring in the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary and even securing a cameo in the 'Deadpool and Wolverine' film, highlighting his close bond with co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
However, his final season at Wrexham saw him sidelined by manager Phil Parkinson towards the end of their League One promotion win. His time has also been marred by persistent injuries, including hamstring, back, and knee problems.
Since moving to Wigan in June, Mullin has scored five goals in all competitions, matching his tally for Wrexham last season. Despite this, he has struggled to replicate his most devastating form for the 12th-placed League One side.
The January Conundrum for Wrexham
With Mullin under contract at Wrexham until summer 2027, the club's hierarchy must now weigh their options carefully. The immediate issue is his loan arrangement. Wrexham could recall him in January, but a regular starting spot in their Championship attack looks challenging with Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead, and Josh Windass currently leading the line.
This leaves Phil Parkinson and the owners with several potential paths:
- Integrate Mullin back into the Championship squad as a squad player.
- Seek a new loan move for the striker to help him regain form and confidence.
- Consider a permanent sale if a suitable offer arrives.
Mullin himself has been pragmatic about his future. In an October interview with talkSPORT, he said: "I loved my time at Wrexham, and it might not be over, who knows... I've obviously got a contract with Wrexham and they'll decide what they want to do with it."
The decision comes as Wrexham, fresh from a 2-1 home win against Preston North End, sit 11th in the Championship table. How they handle the situation of one of their greatest modern players will be a telling moment for the club's sporting direction as they continue their remarkable journey.
