Android Users Eligible for $135 Million Google Settlement Over Data Allegations

Individuals in the United States who have used an Android phone since 2017 may be entitled to a portion of a $135 million settlement from Google. This potential compensation arises from a lawsuit that accused the technology giant of causing Android operating systems to transmit various types of information to Google without user consent.

Background of the Legal Dispute

The lawsuit alleged that these data transfers occurred in the background, without any notification to users, even when devices were in a completely idle state. According to the complaint, transfers could happen over Wi-Fi connections but also via cellular networks, which purportedly consumed the cellular data allowances on affected devices. Google has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to the $135 million settlement to resolve the claims.

A similar case involving California residents previously resulted in a $350 million settlement. However, those who participated in that earlier settlement are not eligible for this new payout.

Eligibility Criteria for the Settlement

To qualify, consumers must be U.S. residents who used an Android device with a cellular data plan at any point since November 12, 2017. It is estimated that approximately 100 million people may meet these criteria and be eligible to file a claim.

The settlement administrator has indicated that a final approval hearing is scheduled for June 23. If the court grants approval, the funds will be distributed to eligible class members, after covering attorney fees and court costs. Payments will be issued electronically, though the exact amount each claimant will receive remains unspecified at this time.

How to Determine Inclusion and File a Claim

Android users who are part of the settlement class should have received notification via mail or email. For those uncertain about their inclusion, the settlement administrator can be contacted directly at 1-844-655-4255 for clarification and assistance with the claims process.

This settlement highlights ongoing concerns about data privacy and corporate accountability in the tech industry, particularly regarding how user information is handled without explicit permission.
