"If your bedroom has hardwood floors, laying down a thick rug during the winter will help to insulate your bedroom and ensure your feet get a nice warm treat when you crawl out of your nice warm bed," John explained. This simple act blocks drafts from rising through floorboards and helps to trap more heat within the room's space.

Why Rugs Work as Insulation

While wooden floors are easy to clean, they offer minimal insulation compared to carpet. Any small gaps can let cold air seep in, lowering the overall ambient temperature. Introducing a rug creates a barrier against this infiltration.

For the best effect, place the rug directly beneath your bed. This strategic position prevents cold air from rising exactly where you sleep, making those early morning exits far more bearable.
