Parents and consumers across the country are being issued an urgent safety warning following the recall of thousands of personal care products from major retailers including Target, Walmart, and Amazon. The items have been pulled from the market due to a critical failure to use legally required child-resistant packaging, posing a serious risk of poisoning, serious injury, or even death to young children.
Two Major Recalls Over Packaging Failures
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced two significant recalls on Thursday. The first involves 50,000 bottles of Mamisan Pain Relieving Topical Ointment, manufactured by Florida-based Plantimex. Sold in 3.52oz yellow plastic jars for around $10, the muscle pain cream was found to contain lidocaine, a potent anaesthetic. While lidocaine can be effective for topical pain relief, it is extremely dangerous if swallowed, with the potential to stop the heart.
The CPSC mandates that any product containing such substances must be sold in packaging that is difficult for children to open. The recalled Mamisan jars, sold nationwide in Target and Walmart stores between April 2024 and October 2025, did not meet this vital safety standard.
In a separate but related announcement, the CPSC also revealed the recall of 840 bottles of Feel The Beard Minoxidil Beard Growth Oil for Men. This $10 product, made in China and sold via Amazon from April to September this year, contains minoxidil. This ingredient, used to promote hair growth, can cause a severe and potentially fatal drop in blood pressure if ingested.
Like lidocaine, minoxidil is legally required to be sold in child-resistant packaging in the United States, a rule the product's dark amber 1oz bottles failed to comply with.
What Consumers Must Do Now
For both recalled products, the immediate instruction from safety officials is clear: keep them out of the sight and reach of children immediately.
Customers who purchased the Mamisan ointment, identifiable by its yellow label and UPC code 860006498115, should contact the manufacturer, Plantimex, to receive a child-resistant replacement lid. They are advised not to use the product until this safer packaging is secured.
Owners of the Feel The Beard Growth Oil are instructed to contact the company directly at ziyad@feelthebeard.com. The manufacturer will provide instructions on how to safely destroy the existing product and will arrange for a replacement.
Officials have confirmed that no injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with either recall to date. It remains unclear how the packaging failures were initially detected, though possibilities include routine CPSC inspections or concerns raised directly by vigilant customers.
A Stark Reminder of Child Poisoning Risks
These recalls highlight a persistent and grave public health issue. In the US alone, approximately 60,000 children under the age of five are hospitalised every year due to poisonings, which frequently involve everyday medications and personal care products. Tragically, these incidents lead to an average of 49 deaths annually within this age group.
The CPSC's warning for both recalls was unequivocal: 'The product's packaging is not child-resistant, posing a risk of serious injury or death from poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children.' The commission emphasised that millions of products, including all prescription medicines, are correctly sold in special packaging designed to thwart curious children, a standard these recalled items dangerously missed.
Consumers, particularly parents, are urged to check their bathrooms and medicine cabinets for these specific products and to heed the recall notices to ensure household safety.
