Clean Your Microwave Naturally with a Lemon: A Post-Christmas Hack
Clean your microwave with a lemon from your fridge

As the New Year settles in, it's the perfect moment to tackle those household chores that were overlooked during the festive rush. High on the list for many is giving a thorough refresh to the kitchen appliances that worked overtime throughout December.

According to a report in the Express, you can restore your microwave to a sparkling state without resorting to strong chemical cleaners. The secret lies in a single, natural ingredient you likely already have chilling in your refrigerator.

The Lemon-Powered Cleaning Method

Cleaning influencer Lily, known online as Clean with Lily, champions this simple, eco-friendly approach. She insists fancy products aren't necessary for a deep clean, favouring the power of citrus instead.

"If you haven't already tried lemons in your microwave to clean it, then make sure you give it a go," Lily advises, calling the technique a "game changer." Her process is straightforward and effective.

Simply cut a lemon in half and place it in a bowl of water, ensuring the fruit can float. Heat the bowl in the microwave for approximately three minutes. The steam generated, infused with citrus, works to loosen and dissolve built-up grease and grime.

Once the steaming cycle is complete, carefully remove the bowl and use a microfibre cloth to wipe away the now-softened residue from the interior walls and ceiling.

Why This Natural Hack Works So Well

The efficacy of this method is backed by science and expert opinion. The citric acid in lemon juice acts as a natural degreaser and disinfectant, breaking down stubborn food splatters.

Noah Pinsonnault from the Good Housekeeping Institute's Home Care & Cleaning Lab explains that the process humidifies the inside of the microwave, softening stuck-on food. He adds that the fresh lemon fragrance also helps to mask or eliminate lingering odours.

Lily highlights an added bonus: "The best thing is that you can add your lemons to the bin afterwards and have your bin smelling fresh. It's a win-win."

Alternative Solutions for Tougher Jobs

For microwaves with more stubborn, baked-on grime, experts recommend a stronger natural combination. Marigold suggests pairing lemon with white vinegar, which is a powerful natural deodoriser and further helps to loosen tough debris.

If you don't have a fresh lemon to hand, you can also use lemon essential oil. Doug Rogers, president of Mr Appliance, told NBC News to add 15 drops of lemon essential oil into one and a half cups of water in a microwave-safe bowl, then heat on high for five to ten minutes.

It's important to note that when using white vinegar, you should avoid using it on porous stone and ceramic surfaces that might be part of your microwave's interior or turntable.

This post-Christmas cleaning tip offers a quick, affordable, and environmentally friendly way to maintain your appliances, ensuring they gleam and smell fresh as you start the New Year.
