Dollar General Agrees to $8.5 Million Settlement for Overcharging Customers

Dollar General customers who were charged more than the shelf price in recent years have a limited window to file a claim and receive compensation from an $8.5 million settlement. The discount retailer, without admitting any wrongdoing, has agreed to a total $15 million resolution following a class action lawsuit that accused it of overcharging shoppers beyond displayed prices.

Eligibility and Compensation Details

The settlement covers individuals who shopped at Dollar General between October 10, 2016, and November 19, 2025. Eligible customers with proof of overcharging can claim $10 or the exact amount they overpaid, whichever is higher, with a maximum payout of $20 per household. Each household is limited to claiming no more than two items.

In addition to cash compensation, all eligible participants will receive a $3 discount on a future in-store purchase of $10 or more. This nationwide discount will be available for two days, with specific dates to be announced later.

Deadlines and Settlement Structure

Claimants must submit valid forms by April 13, 2026. The deadline to object to or opt out of the settlement has already passed, having closed on March 2, 2026. According to Top Class Actions, any uncashed settlement checks will be donated to a national food bank.

Beyond the $8.5 million allocated for consumer payments and court expenses, Dollar General will spend $6.5 million on operational changes aimed at preventing future pricing discrepancies in its stores.

The Independent has reached out to Dollar General for further comment on the settlement and its implementation.
