Cut energy bills by 62% with this simple washing machine tweak
Save 62% on energy bills with washing machine hack

Households across the UK can make a significant dent in their energy bills by making one simple change to their laundry routine, according to consumer experts.

The money-saving temperature switch

Consumer watchdog Which? has issued new guidance urging people to wash clothes at lower temperatures. Switching from 40°C to 30°C saves 38% of energy, while dropping further to 20°C can save an impressive 62% of energy usage.

This advice comes at a crucial time, following energy regulator Ofgem's announcement on Friday, November 21, that it will raise the energy price cap for the January to March 2026 period.

How much could you actually save?

The potential savings are substantial. Which? calculates that the average washing machine costs approximately £65 per year to run four washes weekly, based on October 2025's price cap.

By reducing wash temperature to 30°C, households could cut £25 from their annual energy bill. Those who go further and wash at 20°C could save an even more impressive £40 per year.

Remarkably, this significant reduction in energy consumption and cost should not generally affect stain removal, making it an easy win for most laundry loads.

When cooler washes aren't suitable

While lower temperature washing offers clear benefits, consumer experts note there are exceptions. Washing at 40°C remains better for tougher stains that need extra cleaning power.

More importantly, Which? emphasises that to eliminate bacteria effectively, a 60°C wash or higher with a good detergent is necessary. This is particularly important for items that require hygienic cleaning.

Medical professionals support this approach. Dr Xand van Tulleken advised BBC Morning Live viewers earlier this year that 30°C or 40°C is often sufficient for everyday items, while 20°C works well for lightly soiled clothing.

The doctor revealed his personal preference, stating: "I'm a 20 degrees guy for everything except my workout clothes, which go in hotter." He also highlighted additional benefits beyond cost savings, noting that cooler washes are quicker and better for the environment.

Beyond financial and environmental advantages, washing at 30°C is gentler on delicate fabrics and helps protect brightly coloured clothing from fading, making it a smart choice for maintaining your wardrobe's condition while reducing household expenses.
