Super Greens Recall After Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 45

Federal health authorities in the United States have confirmed a significant salmonella outbreak linked to a popular dietary supplement, prompting an urgent nationwide recall. At least 45 people have fallen ill after consuming a specific brand of "super greens" powder.

Nationwide Recall Issued for Contaminated Product

The manufacturer, Superfoods Inc., has issued a voluntary recall for its Live it Up-brand Super Greens powder. The affected products include both the original and wild berry flavours. Consumers are being urged to check their cupboards for any containers with expiration dates ranging from August 2026 to January 2028.

Officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise the public not to consume, sell, or serve these products. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase immediately.

Illnesses Span Multiple States, Hospitalisations Reported

The outbreak has had a wide geographic reach, with cases identified in 21 separate states across the country. The states affected are:

  • Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky
  • Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska
  • New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee
  • Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Illnesses connected to the contaminated super greens supplement were reported between 22 August and 30 December 2025. Of the 45 confirmed cases, at least 12 individuals were severe enough to require hospitalisation. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported in connection with this outbreak.

Ongoing Investigation and Health Advice

The FDA has stated that its investigation is ongoing and warns that additional products could be contaminated. Salmonella poisoning symptoms typically begin within hours or days of consuming a tainted product.

Common symptoms include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps

While most healthy adults recover without specific treatment within a week, the infection can turn serious for vulnerable groups. This includes children under 5, adults aged 65 and older, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms is advised to seek medical attention promptly.
