A British food content creator has revealed the single, significant letdown he encountered after committing to a week-long culinary challenge at the popular pub chain, Wetherspoons.
The Week-Long Wetherspoons Challenge
Sam Wilder, known for his food-based trials, decided to eat exclusively at 'Spoons' for seven days straight. The influencer, who has previously undertaken similar stints at other major chains, documented his experience in a video that amassed around 100,000 views online after being posted on 20 December 2025.
While the establishment is famed for its affordable drinks and famously labyrinthine toilets, Sam discovered it also provides a surprisingly extensive menu of low-cost meals. He acknowledged the chain's value, stating, "It's 100% great for people that are on a budget. Somewhere like Spoons, you know what you're getting and you can't really argue with the price."
A Mixed Bag of Budget Meals
Over the course of the week, Sam sampled a wide variety of dishes from the menu. His selections included pancakes with fresh fruit and maple syrup, nachos, halloumi fries, and southern fried chicken strips. He also tried a ramen noodle bowl and a gourmet burger.
His overall impression of the food was lukewarm but pragmatic. "The quality is definitely varied among the dishes they serve," he noted. "But if you're looking to eat out cheap and cheerfully, then it's a good place to go." He added a caveat about portion sizes, remarking, "All of the food wasn't too bad, but I couldn't help but think this might be meant for more than one person."
The One Big Mistake: Bangers and Mash
However, one classic British pub dish stood out for all the wrong reasons. The bangers and mash proved to be a major disappointment for Sam. He was scathing in his critique of the meal, which many would consider a pub staple.
"It's not good," he said bluntly. "Whoever cooked this definitely left it in the microwave a bit too long. It's way too hot that it has any right to be. It's a microwave job; it wasn't properly cooked."
A Highlight Among the Low Prices
It wasn't all criticism, though. Sam found a clear favourite during his challenge: the pasta alfredo with bacon. He praised it enthusiastically, calling it "the prettiest looking meal I'd had so far" and declaring it looked "absolutely delightful."
"Zero complaints. The best thing I've had," he said. "The sauce was really tasty, I like how the bacon is cooked and mixed with it. The bacon is slightly crisp to give it some texture and the rocket helps give it that pepperiness. It's seasoned well. I was honestly happily surprised."
In conclusion, Sam Wilder's experiment confirmed Wetherspoons' reputation as a reliable destination for budget-conscious diners, albeit with inconsistent quality and one notably failed classic.
