Lidl Announces Seventh Pay Increase Since 2023 and Doubles Paternity Leave

Discount supermarket chain Lidl has unveiled its seventh pay rise since 2023, marking a significant investment in its workforce. The German-owned retailer is also doubling paid paternity leave, reinforcing its commitment to employee benefits and workplace equality.

Pay Rise Details and Investment

Lidl is investing an additional £29 million in pay rises, which will take effect from March 1. Entry-level pay nationwide will increase to £13.45 per hour, rising to £14.45 with length of service. In London, new starter pay will jump from £14.35 to £14.80 per hour, reaching £15.30 for those with longer service.

The group, which employs over 35,000 workers across the UK, claims this move reinstates its position as the highest paying UK supermarket. This announcement comes ahead of the national minimum wage increase from £12.21 to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and over, set for April 1.

Enhanced Paternity Leave Policy

In a parallel development, Lidl is doubling paid paternity leave from two to four weeks at full pay. Employees with five years of service will be eligible for eight weeks of fully paid leave. Stephanie Rogers, Lidl's chief people officer, emphasised the importance of this change, stating, "We believe that a longer period of paid paternity leave is a vital step on our journey towards gender equality in the workplace."

Business Growth and Expansion

Lidl's investment in its workforce coincides with ambitious expansion plans. The retailer revealed earlier this year that it will open 19 new stores over the next eight weeks, creating up to 640 jobs. This follows the milestone of opening its 1,000th store last year, with plans to add around 40 more sites by February 28.

According to experts at Worldpanel, Lidl is currently Britain's sixth-largest grocery chain and has made the biggest market share gains in the sector in recent months. The group reported strong Christmas sales, with a 10% surge leading to over £1.1 billion in turnover in the four weeks up to Christmas Eve.

Leadership Perspective

Stephanie Rogers highlighted the strategic importance of these initiatives, saying, "Our colleagues are the backbone of our business, and their success is our success." She added, "We are continuing to mark unprecedented growth across Great Britain, creating thousands more jobs along the way, while continuing to invest in our people."

This comprehensive approach underscores Lidl's focus on competitive compensation and progressive workplace policies as it expands its footprint in the UK market.
