No Injuries Reported as Firefighters Battle Blaze
Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte M. Moses confirmed that no injuries resulted from the explosion at the Valero refinery, situated approximately 90 miles east of Houston. Mayor Moses specifically urged residents on the city's west side to remain indoors, noting that fire crews had arrived on scene and were actively working to extinguish the fire.
"There's been an explosion, yes, but we're OK; everybody's OK," Mayor Moses stated. "They're trying to put the fire out as quickly as possible."
Refinery Operations and Broader Market Context
The affected Valero facility employs around 770 workers and possesses the capacity to process roughly 435,000 barrels of crude oil daily. It specialises in refining heavy sour crude into essential products including gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. This explosion unfolds against a backdrop of heightened gasoline prices, driven by global oil supply uncertainties stemming from the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Online imagery and video footage depict a large, dark smoke column and visible flames emanating from the refinery complex. Local residents reported experiencing a loud boom and feeling their windows vibrate from the force of the blast.
The City of Port Arthur officially advised via social media: "For your safety please remain in place until the ‘All Clear’ is given by emergency personnel." Texas State Representative Christian Manuel further emphasised the need for precaution, urging nearby individuals to stay indoors, limit outdoor activities, and keep windows and doors sealed while following local official guidance.
Environmental Monitoring and Corporate Response
Representative Manuel also noted that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality had deployed to the site with air quality monitoring equipment, coordinating with local and state partners. Valero, the refinery operator, has not yet provided an immediate response to requests for comment from The Associated Press regarding the incident and its ongoing management.
