Coffee giant Starbucks has announced it will enforce a strict 'one per customer' rule for the UK launch of its viral Bearista cup, following scenes of near-'riot' during its release in America.
Frenzy Over a Teddy Bear Cup
The chain confirmed the UK arrival of the Bearista Cold Cup on its official Instagram feed on January 12, with a cryptic post stating, 'This is not a drill... see you 15.01'. The product, a clear plastic cup shaped like a teddy bear and topped with a green beanie hat and matching straw, became a social media sensation in the US in November 2025.
British fans expressed a mix of excitement and trepidation in the comments, with one hoping the launch 'doesn’t resemble the Hunger Games' and another stating they 'cba if it’s going to cause a riot'. These fears are rooted in the American experience, where customers queued from 2am and limited stock sold out in minutes.
Strict Rules to Manage Demand
In response, Starbucks UK has pre-emptively implemented a purchase limit. A company spokesperson confirmed shoppers would be limited to one Bearista cup per customer. It has also been indicated that not all UK branches will have the item in stock.
While a UK price is yet to be officially confirmed, the cup retailed for $29.95 in the States. Using current exchange rates, British customers can expect to pay around £22 when it goes on sale from January 15.
Preparing for Launch Day
Prospective buyers are advised to use the Starbucks store locator to find participating branches, as opening times vary. Some stores open as early as 6.30am, while others commence trading from 7am.
The decisive action to limit purchases underscores the intense demand for viral, limited-edition merchandise in the retail sector. Starbucks will be hoping the rule ensures a smoother, safer launch on this side of the Atlantic, avoiding the chaotic scenes that marred its US debut.
