As a chronic over-packer, the phrase 'hand luggage only' strikes fear into my heart. Even on short trips, I tend to pack for every possible weather condition. Last year, I was charged nearly £50 by a Turkish budget airline for exceeding the weight limit by a few kilos, dragging back a suitcase full of unworn clothes.
The Viral 3-2-1 Packing Method
TikTok is brimming with packing hacks, and the 5-4-3-2-1 method caught my eye. For a week away, it suggests five tops, four bottoms, three shoes, two layers, and one dress. Since my trip was only three nights, I adapted it to 3-2-1: three tops, two bottoms, and an extra pair of shoes. The neutral colour palette promised easy mixing and matching.
First Problem: Evening Wear
Even with the full method, one dress isn't enough for multiple nights out. I needed extra dresses and a jumpsuit, which quickly filled my cabin bag. Other essentials like pyjamas, underwear, swimwear, and minimal makeup further reduced space.
Second Problem: No Spare Clothes
After a hot plane ride and long queues in Barcelona, I desperately wanted a fresh change of clothes. My minimalist packing left no spares, so I ended up buying a new t-shirt—an annoying distraction on a short break.
Verdict: Useful but Needs Adaptation
Despite these issues, I liked the method. It simplified unpacking and morning routines, and neutral colours with statement accessories added personality. However, the method requires personalisation: for mild city breaks it works, but for varied activities or warm weather, pack extra tops and evening options. I'll use it again—but with twice the underwear I think I need, just in case.
