Flight Attendant Reveals Best & Worst Economy Seats for Long-Haul Comfort
Cabin Crew's Guide to Best Economy Seats on Long-Haul Flights

For many travellers, the prospect of a long-haul journey in economy class can be daunting, with limited space and potential disruptions from fellow passengers. However, a seasoned cabin crew member from Virgin Atlantic has revealed that strategic seat selection can significantly improve the experience.

Choosing Your Seat: Smooth Skies vs. Sound Sleep

The flight attendant, who boasts five years of experience, provided clear guidance tailored to different passenger priorities. For those anxious about turbulence, she offered a crucial tip: book a seat located above the wings.

This area provides the 'smoothest ride' as it is closest to the aircraft's centre of gravity, meaning passengers feel less movement and vibration compared to seats further forward or back.

When it comes to the elusive goal of sleeping well on a plane, several factors like legroom and noise come into play. The expert advised that securing a seat as far away from the galley or lavatories as possible increases your chances of rest. She explained to the Express that while the quietest spot is unpredictable, the rear of the plane can be noisy due to loud toilet flushes and galley activity during night flights.

'The seats at the back on all our aircraft recline, so that’s not a problem,' she noted, 'but sometimes light catches through the galley curtains on a night flight, and it can be noisy as the crew are working. So, I also wouldn’t choose back row seats.'

The Prime Positions for the Ideal Flight Experience

For passengers seeking the optimal balance of service and comfort, the cabin crew member pinpointed two specific locations. Her ideal recommendations are either five rows from the front or five rows from the back of the economy cabin.

Choosing a seat near the front means you are likely to receive your first-choice meal option and can enjoy a swift exit after landing. Meanwhile, those seated towards the rear are often served their meals more quickly, as the cabin crew frequently work from the back of the plane simultaneously. A key consideration for the rear section, however, is that turbulence can be felt more acutely there.

Unlocking Hidden In-Flight Perks

Beyond seat selection, Virgin Atlantic's flight service manager and Love Is Blind star, Ashleigh Berry, previously highlighted often-missed complimentary perks for the Daily Mail. She pointed out 'secret wonder walls' in the galleys, which house snack baskets.

In premium cabins, these deluxe boxes contain items from premium crisps and sweets to eye masks and extra socks. Ashleigh noted that sometimes customers are unaware of these amenities even after purchasing their ticket. She confirmed that economy class passengers also have access to plenty of hidden joys to enhance their journey.

By combining strategic seat choice with knowledge of available amenities, economy passengers can transform their long-haul travel experience from one of endurance to relative comfort.
