LNER Unveils New Tri-Mode Trains for East Coast Route

LNER has officially unveiled a brand-new fleet of ten intercity trains, designated as the Class 897s, which are set to revolutionise travel on the East Coast Main Line. These modern trains will replace carriages that have been in service for nearly four decades, marking a significant upgrade for one of the UK's busiest rail routes.

A New Era Under Great British Railways

The introduction of the Class 897s represents a landmark moment as they are the first trains to be launched under the Great British Railways (GBR) nationalisation initiative. The trains proudly feature GBR branding, symbolising a shift towards a more unified and publicly managed rail network across the country.

Enhanced Passenger Comfort and Accessibility

Passengers can look forward to a vastly improved travel experience with a host of new features designed for comfort and convenience. Key enhancements include:

  • Reclinable seats with side bolsters and wider head cushions in first-class, complemented by adjustable mood lighting.
  • All seats equipped with plug sockets and modern USB-C ports for device charging.
  • Redesigned tables to better accommodate wheelchair users, alongside braille seat numbers and additional luggage racks to improve accessibility for all travellers.

Innovative Tri-Mode Technology

The Class 897s are pioneering as the UK's first long-distance "tri-mode" trains. This advanced technology allows them to operate seamlessly on overhead electric lines, diesel power, and battery energy. This flexibility not only ensures reliable service across varied infrastructure but also offers a more environmentally friendly travel option by reducing emissions and promoting sustainable rail travel.

With these state-of-the-art features, LNER's new fleet promises to deliver a smoother, greener, and more accessible journey for passengers along the East Coast Main Line, setting a new standard for intercity rail travel in the UK.
