LNER Unveils New 'Serenza' Train Fleet for Enhanced East Coast Journeys
Major British rail operator LNER has revealed comprehensive details about its forthcoming 'Serenza' train fleet, a new generation of rolling stock designed to significantly upgrade passenger experience along the vital East Coast Main Line between London and Scotland. The fleet, expected to enter service in the coming years, promises a blend of comfort, accessibility, and sustainability.
A New Era for Long-Distance Rail Travel
LNER will receive ten of the new Class 897 long-distance trains, marking the first introduction under the auspices of Great British Railways (GBR). GBR is the new public body being established by the UK government to oversee the renationalised UK rail network. Manufactured by CAF, these ten-carriage trains will accommodate a total of 569 passengers across both Standard and First Class cabins.
The First Class experience is set for a notable upgrade, featuring spacious reclining seats designed with passenger comfort as a priority. Engineers have developed new and enhanced seat pads, widened side bolsters and head cushions, and reshaped the cushions to provide optimal support. The materials have been carefully selected to maximise both durability and sustainability, ensuring longevity and environmental consideration.
Enhanced Amenities and Passenger Convenience
Beyond the seats, the Serenza fleet introduces a suite of improved amenities aimed at modern travellers. Throughout the train, passengers will find five dedicated water bottle refilling stations, promoting hydration and reducing single-use plastic waste. Each carriage will be equipped with digital screens providing real-time journey information and updates.
Keeping devices powered will be effortless, as every seat comes fitted with built-in USB-C ports and standard power sockets. For Standard Class customers, a new and improved Café Bar will offer a selection of delicious food and drinks sourced from local suppliers along the LNER route, with digital menu screens displaying available items in real-time.
Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusivity
LNER has placed a strong emphasis on accessibility in the design of the Serenza fleet. The trains will include improved, spacious wheelchair areas with additional luggage racks nearby to prevent misuse of space. Redesigned bike storage with secure straps and enhanced general luggage capacity address practical travel needs.
Specific design tweaks include tables reconfigured to give more room for wheelchair users, seat legs repositioned to create extra space for assistance dogs, and a full-length grab rail installed along the Café Bar. Braille seat numbers will be featured to assist visually impaired customers in locating their seats independently. Toilet facilities have also been redesigned based on customer feedback, featuring improved wash basin designs, baby changing tables, and clearer signage in accessible toilets.
Greener Journeys with Tri-Mode Technology
A significant technical advancement of the Class 897 fleet is its tri-mode capability. These trains can operate seamlessly on electric, diesel, and battery power, offering operational flexibility and contributing to greener, more sustainable journeys across the network. This technology ensures reliability while reducing the environmental footprint of long-distance rail travel.
Dr Linda Wain, Engineering Director at LNER, commented on the reveal: 'This is an exciting milestone for LNER as we reveal an insight into what our customers can expect from their journeys in the future and unveil a name. Our new fleet will bring more comfortable, more reliable and greener journeys across the East Coast Main Line for decades to come.'
While LNER has not yet announced the exact date for the new trains to enter operation, the company has indicated that passengers can expect further details in the near future as the project progresses. The Serenza fleet represents a substantial investment in the future of Britain's rail infrastructure, aiming to set a new standard for comfort and efficiency on one of the country's busiest routes.
