Commuters across Glasgow faced a morning of severe disruption on Tuesday after a series of crashes on two key motorways brought rush hour traffic to a grinding halt. The incidents, which began in the early hours, have resulted in delays of over an hour for drivers trying to navigate in and around the city.
Where and When the Disruption Began
The initial incident that sparked the major traffic problems occurred on the northbound carriageway of the M74 at junction 1A, the Polmadie Road interchange in Glasgow. This collision was reported at approximately 7.15am on Tuesday, 17 December 2025.
Following this, a number of separate accidents were reported on various sections of the nearby M8 motorway, compounding the congestion and creating a perfect storm of rush hour gridlock. The combination of incidents made journeys to work across the city particularly arduous.
Severe Impact and Official Warnings
The impact on travel times has been substantial. Official sources confirmed the scale of the disruption. Traffic Scotland issued an alert on social media platform X, stating: "The M74 remains restricted at junction 1A northbound following a collision. All vehicles involved have been removed from the carriageway however traffic remains heavy. Delays are approximately 73 minutes."
This warning underlined the extent of the problem, confirming that while the vehicles from the original crash had been cleared, the knock-on effect for traffic flow was severe and long-lasting.
A City Struggling with Congestion
The cascading effect of the multiple incidents left major routes into and around Glasgow heavily congested for hours. Drivers reported standstill conditions and lengthy queues as the morning progressed.
The key points of disruption were:
- The ongoing restriction on the M74 northbound at Polmadie.
- Secondary accidents causing additional blockages on the M8.
- Widespread knock-on delays affecting surrounding A-roads and city streets as drivers sought alternative routes.
Transport authorities urged motorists to allow significant extra time for their journeys or to consider alternative travel plans if possible while recovery and clear-up operations continued.
