Major Rail Disruption: 'Do Not Travel' Alert Issued After Derailment and Signalling Faults
Rail 'Do Not Travel' Alert After Derailment and Signalling Issues

Passengers across south-east England are facing severe travel chaos after a major rail operator issued a stark "do not travel" alert. The warning comes in response to multiple incidents, including a train derailment and a critical signalling fault, which have crippled services on key routes.

Widespread Disruption Across the Network

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), the UK's largest railway franchise by passenger numbers, has urged travellers to avoid journeys on Wednesday morning "if at all possible." The operator, which runs Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express services, cited "multiple incidents" as the cause of the extensive disruption.

Key Incidents Behind the Alert

The issues include a train derailment inside a depot in Selhurst, south-east London, and a signalling fault between London Blackfriars and Norwood Junction. National Rail Enquiries reported that the signalling problem has reduced the number of available rail lines in that section, forcing trains to operate at slower speeds than usual.

In a statement to passengers, Southern advised: "If you are travelling on our network today, your journey may be delayed and you may need to use an alternative route to reach your destination. If you can, please delay your journey until later today. Please check your train before travelling and allow an additional 60 minutes for your journey."

Affected Routes and Service Changes

The disruption has led to significant service suspensions and alterations. Key impacts include:

  • Services suspended on routes between London Bridge and East Grinstead; Orpington and Luton; Brighton and Cambridge; and Bedford and Three Bridges.
  • Trains that usually run between Welwyn Garden City and Sevenoaks are only operating between London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks.
  • Services between Rainham and Luton are only running between Rainham and Dartford.
  • Trains that normally operate between Horsham and Peterborough, or Brighton and Bedford, may be diverted via Selhurst instead of Norwood Junction.

Context of GTR and Nationalisation

GTR, which also includes the Great Northern operator, carries approximately 18% of all train trips in the UK, making it a critical component of the nation's transport infrastructure. This disruption occurs against the backdrop of ongoing nationalisation efforts in Great Britain's rail industry.

Most major rail operators are now back in public hands, with West Midlands Trains being the latest to transition last weekend. GTR is expected to be the next operator nationalised, with plans set for May, raising questions about the resilience and management of services during this period of change.

The "do not travel" alert underscores the vulnerability of rail networks to technical failures and accidents, impacting thousands of commuters and travellers in the densely populated south-east region. Passengers are advised to monitor updates closely and consider postponing non-essential trips until services stabilise.
