Tragic Police Chase Crash Claims Life of 'Deeply Loved' Edinburgh Woman
Taylor Jenkins, a 24-year-old woman from Edinburgh, has been killed in a devastating head-on collision on a dual carriageway during a high-speed police pursuit. The fatal incident occurred on the A19 near Sunderland in the early hours of Sunday, March 1, when the white BMW in which she was a passenger was travelling south on the northbound carriageway.
Family Tributes and Police Statements
Ms Jenkins' family released an emotional statement, describing her as "deeply loved" and expressing their profound grief. "Taylor was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can ever express," they said. "Her kindness, laughter, and beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and her memory will live on in all of us. During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for privacy and compassion as we grieve. We are grateful for the overwhelming support and kindness shown to our family."
Sergeant Greg Huntley of Northumbria Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit echoed the family's plea for privacy. "Our thoughts firmly remain with all of Taylor's loved ones as they process their devastating loss," he stated. "We would echo their plea and ask they're given privacy as they come to terms with Taylor's passing, and we will continue to offer them our support."
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The police investigation into the collision is actively continuing, with a man now facing charges in connection with the incident. Kane Farragher, 24, from Birkenhead, Merseyside, has appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving whilst disqualified, and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Sergeant Huntley urged the public to avoid speculation. "Given this, we would please ask the public to refrain from any speculation both in the community and online that could have a negative impact on legal proceedings at court," he said. "We thank the public for their continued support and would urge any further witnesses to get in touch."
Additional Injuries and Independent Inquiry
Another passenger in the BMW, a man in his 20s, remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition following the crash. The BMW collided with a VW Sharan, whose driver required hospital treatment for non-serious injuries.
In response to the circumstances of the police pursuit, the Independent Office for Police Conduct has initiated an investigation into the incident. This independent inquiry will examine the actions and protocols followed during the pursuit that led to the tragic collision.
