Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Dublin Mother Set Alight at Home
A man has been formally charged with attempted murder following a horrific incident where a Dublin mother of two was doused with accelerant and set on fire at the door of her own home. Paul Brannigan, aged 34 and residing at Lealand Drive in Clondalkin, faces charges for the attempted murder of Alexis Campion and assault causing harm.
The attack occurred on November 25 last year at Ms Campion's residence in Oak Downs, Clondalkin, Dublin. The 44-year-old victim sustained severe, life-altering burns to her face and body, resulting in her being placed in a coma for several weeks. She remains hospitalised as she continues to recover from the devastating injuries.
Court Appearance and Legal Proceedings
Brannigan appeared before Judge John Hughes at Dublin District Court on Saturday morning, alongside two co-defendants. Garda Danielle O'Sullivan provided evidence, stating that Brannigan made no reply when the charges were presented to him. Due to the gravity of the attempted murder charge, which falls outside the District Court's jurisdiction for bail, he was automatically remanded into custody. Any bail application must be made through the High Court.
During the hearing, Brannigan wore a black T-shirt, grey trousers, and sliders, remaining silent throughout and not indicating a plea. His solicitor, Carol Slattery, confirmed he is unemployed and eligible for legal aid, which was granted by the court.
Co-Defendants and Additional Charges
The co-defendants, Nathan Dolan, 18, of Monastery Gate Avenue, and Keith McCabe, 41, of Thornfield Square, both in Clondalkin, face related offences. They are charged with making threats to kill Ms Campion and another man at the property on the same date, as well as extortion by demanding money with menaces.
Garda Shane O'Brien reported that McCabe also made no reply to his four charges. Judge Hughes noted objections to McCabe's bail, though his solicitor, Michael Hennessy, indicated an intention to apply for bail at a subsequent hearing. Legal aid was granted, and the judge agreed to request medical treatment for McCabe while in custody. McCabe, dressed in a blue jacket, grey top, and trousers, did not address the court.
Garda Charles McPartland stated that Dolan, who is unemployed, similarly made no reply when charged. His solicitor mentioned that no bail application had been made at this stage. Legal aid was also granted to Dolan, who appeared in a dark hooded coat, runners, and grey trousers.
Upcoming Court Dates and Investigation Details
Brannigan and McCabe are scheduled to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Wednesday, while Dolan will appear at the same court on Tuesday. Directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions are still pending, as the legal process continues to unfold.
The three individuals were arrested on Tuesday and detained at Clondalkin and Ronanstown garda stations for questioning under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. They were formally charged on Friday evening and held in custody pending the court hearing.
In connection with the investigation, multiple properties in the Clondalkin and Ballyfermot areas have been searched by authorities. A family liaison officer has been appointed to keep Alexis Campion and her family informed about the ongoing investigation. Gardaí are actively appealing for information from the public and urging anyone with relevant footage, including dashcam recordings, to come forward to assist with the case.
