Man Fatally Shot by Police Following Violent Chainsaw Home Invasion and Stabbing Incident
A man has been shot dead by police officers after a violent rampage that began with a chainsaw-wielding home invasion and left a woman with serious stab wounds. The series of events unfolded in the early hours of Friday, February 6, in New South Wales, Australia, prompting a critical incident investigation.
Violent Home Invasion and Initial Police Response
Police were called to a residence on Heath Avenue in Tuncurry, approximately three hours from Sydney, following reports of a home invasion. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 28-year-old woman with severe injuries. She was treated at the scene by New South Wales Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Authorities reported that the man had forced his way into the woman's home while armed with a chainsaw and a knife. After the stabbing, he fled the property in a white four-wheel-drive vehicle, which police spotted shortly afterward on nearby Stewart Parade, initiating a pursuit.
Chaotic Pursuit and Escalating Violence
The car chase led through a sports ground before the vehicle crashed on the Forster Bridge. Police rushed to the bridge and located the four-wheel-drive, but were informed that the man had carjacked another vehicle. This stolen vehicle subsequently rammed a police car, resulting in minor injuries to an officer.
The pursuit continued to Idlewood Drive in Rainbow Flat, where the man drove onto a property and entered another home, still armed with a knife. He attempted to steal another vehicle before exiting the residence and confronting police officers.
Confrontation and Fatal Shooting
In an effort to detain the armed man, officers deployed a taser multiple times. However, he ran towards another property and then charged at an officer, who responded by firing shots. The man, believed to be 41 years old but not yet formally identified, received first aid from police at the scene but was pronounced dead.
