Off-Duty Met Police Officer Referred to Standards Team Following Golders Green Altercation
An off-duty volunteer Metropolitan Police officer has been formally referred to the force's professional standards team following his apparent involvement in a heated altercation between residents of Golders Green and journalists from Al Jazeera. The incident occurred on Monday as reporters were covering the aftermath of a serious arson attack targeting the Jewish Community Ambulance service, Hatzola.
Details of the Confrontation
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the off-duty special constable was among the local residents involved in the dispute. Footage circulating online shows a crowd of approximately 50 people surrounding the Al Jazeera journalists near a police cordon on Highfield Road. In the video, one man can be heard declaring, "no-one needs Al Jazeera here," while others shouted "go home." There were additional reports that the journalists were labelled as "terrorist sympathisers" and accused of spreading "terrorist propaganda."
Golders Green, a London suburb with a significant Jewish population, was the site where four Hatzola ambulances were deliberately set alight in what police are treating as an antisemitic hate crime. CCTV footage captured individuals igniting the vehicles before fleeing the scene.
Police Response and Investigation
In an official statement, the Met acknowledged the incident, stating: "We are aware that an off-duty serving Met special constable was involved in the altercation. The matter has been referred to the Directorate of Professional Standards for assessment." The force emphasised its commitment to press freedom, adding: "Freedom of the press is important and journalists must be able to do their job without being subject to intimidation or harassment."
Officers present at the scene did intervene, but the Met recognised that the journalists were put in a difficult situation for an extended period, ultimately leading them to leave the area. The police have announced they will review all available footage to determine whether any criminal offences were committed by those involved.
Broader Context of the Arson Attack
The altercation took place against the backdrop of a significant police and media presence following the arson attack. Two British men were arrested in connection with the incident on Wednesday and have since been released on bail pending further investigation. The attack on Hatzola, a vital community ambulance service, has raised serious concerns about rising antisemitism in the area.
Al Jazeera, an independent news organisation based in Doha with partial funding from the Qatari government, was covering the story when the confrontation erupted. The Mirror has reached out to Al Jazeera for comment on the incident.
The Met has instructed officers on duty in Golders Green to remain vigilant for any similar altercations in the coming days, underscoring the ongoing tensions in the community.
