NJ Police Finish DoorDash Order After Arresting Driver

Police officers in southern New Jersey demonstrated unexpected community service when they completed a food delivery after arresting a DoorDash driver during a routine traffic stop. The incident occurred in Washington Township on Sunday, highlighting a unique blend of law enforcement and civic duty.

Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest and Unfinished Deliveries

According to authorities, an officer on patrol stopped a vehicle near a local high school for a traffic violation. During the stop, the officer discovered the driver had outstanding warrants from another county and promptly placed him under arrest. Police did not release the driver's identity or specific details about the warrants, maintaining standard procedural confidentiality.

Officers Step In to Complete the Delivery

While being taken into custody, the driver informed officers that he was in the middle of delivering two DoorDash orders still in his car. Instead of leaving the deliveries incomplete, Sgt. Matt Barnett and Officer Mike Scheer decided to finish the job themselves. Body camera footage and Ring doorbell recordings released by the department on Facebook show the officers arriving at the customer's home and handing over the food to surprised residents.

"I thought something happened. Oh my God, I got so scared," one of the recipients later recounted, expressing initial alarm at the unexpected police visit.

Apology and Community Response

In their Facebook post, the department apologized to the resident, acknowledging that their sudden appearance might have been startling. "And to the resident who answered the door, we are sorry for the surprise and for startling you! We hope lunch was still hot," officers wrote. They added, "Just another day serving the Washington Township community… in more ways than one."

Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik remarked on the unusual nature of the incident, noting that while he has encountered many scenarios in his career, this was a first for the department. "I never heard of anything like that in the South Jersey area. It's sort of a first for us here in Washington Township, definitely," Gurcsik told WPVI.

Similar Incidents Across the United States

This is not an isolated case of police stepping in to complete food deliveries. Last year in New Mexico, a motorcycle officer finished a DoorDash delivery after arresting the driver during a traffic stop for an unresolved insurance ticket. Similarly, in Tempe, Arizona, officers completed a GrubHub order in July, delivering a pizza to a customer as the driver was arrested.

The Washington Township Police Department's actions have sparked discussions about community policing and the adaptability of officers in unexpected situations. DoorDash has been contacted for comment, but no official statement has been released at this time.
