Barbie Exhibition Tickets Go on Sale for Inaugural Scottish Showcase

Tickets have officially gone on sale for a groundbreaking exhibition that traces the evolution of Barbie, marking its first-ever appearance in Scotland. The highly anticipated event will be hosted at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, offering visitors a unique journey through the iconic doll's history from 1959 to the present day.

Rare and Diverse Collection on Display

The exhibition, titled Barbie: The Exhibition, will feature an extensive array of more than 150 dolls, including significant milestones in Barbie's legacy. Highlights include the first black, Hispanic, and Asian versions of the doll, as well as pioneering representations such as the first Barbie with Down’s Syndrome and the first in a wheelchair. A rare, hand-painted first edition Barbie will also be showcased, adding to the historical significance of the display.

In addition to the dolls, the exhibition will present a variety of items that have defined Barbie's world over the decades. This includes an assortment of clothes, playsets, and vehicles that have captivated generations. Notable examples range from the 1971 Sunset Malibu Barbie to the 1985 Day to Night Barbie, famous for its transformative pink work suit that converts into an evening gown. Visitors can also marvel at two examples of 1992’s Totally Hair Barbie, whose hair extends all the way to her toes, alongside rare Barbie Dreamhouses and accessories.

Partnership and Cultural Significance

This exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Design Museum in London and Mattel Inc, bringing together expertise in design and pop culture. Bailie Annette Christie, chair of Glasgow Life, which operates the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, expressed enthusiasm for the event. "Now spring has sprung and the days are getting longer, it’s a joy to start planning the adventures ahead this summer," she said. "This year, that includes the opportunity to discover the history and design of the doll that started it all, the phenomenon that is Barbie."

Christie further emphasized the cultural impact of the exhibition, noting, "Glasgow Life is excited to work with the Design Museum and Mattel to bring an enduring icon to Glasgow. This exhibition is stylish, culturally significant and rooted in design history, and it’s an honour to be the first city in Scotland to host a major exhibition dedicated to Barbie." She encouraged early ticket purchases, stating, "With tickets on sale, now is the perfect time to get ahead of the crowd and plan a joyful, engaging, even nostalgic visit with family and friends. Make a real day of it at what promises to be one of the biggest and most talked-about shows of the summer."

Exhibition Details and Highlights

The exhibition will not only focus on Barbie but also explore the evolution of her friends, including a dedicated section for Ken, examining how he has changed since his debut in 1961. This comprehensive approach aims to provide a holistic view of the Barbie universe, appealing to fans of all ages.

Scheduled to open on June 13, 2026, and run until October 18 of the same year, the exhibition promises to be a major attraction. Tickets became available at 10am on Tuesday and can be purchased online through the official Glasgow Life website. This event is expected to draw significant crowds, offering a blend of nostalgia, design appreciation, and cultural commentary.

As the first of its kind in Scotland, the Barbie exhibition at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum represents a milestone in bringing global pop culture phenomena to local audiences, fostering engagement and celebration of design heritage.
