Royal Mail Unveils Commemorative Stamps Honouring Hornby Model Railways

Royal Mail has announced the release of a special commemorative stamp collection celebrating the iconic world of Hornby Model Railways. This philatelic tribute marks a significant moment for both railway enthusiasts and stamp collectors across the United Kingdom.

A Century of Railway Modelling Excellence

The collection consists of twelve beautifully designed stamps that pay homage to Hornby's remarkable century-long legacy. Frank Hornby, the ingenious inventor of Meccano, first introduced his clockwork Hornby Series trains in 1920. This pioneering move was followed in 1929 by the production of the first scale models representing authentic British locomotives, establishing a tradition of craftsmanship that continues to this day.

Exclusive Photographic Commissions

Each of the eight main stamps features an exclusive, specially commissioned photograph of a classic Hornby model. These include detailed representations of the InterCity 125 High Speed Train, the elegant Bournemouth Belle Pullman cars, and the historic 1920 No 1 locomotive. The stamps are set against a dramatic backdrop illustration depicting a London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) locomotive in full steam, adding to their visual appeal.

Nostalgic Miniature Sheet Designs

An additional four stamps are presented in a separate miniature sheet that celebrates Hornby's heritage through nostalgic design elements. Each of these stamps features classic packaging, vintage catalogue covers, and promotional artwork from different historical eras, offering collectors a visual journey through the brand's evolution.

Official Statements of Pride and Recognition

David Gold, Royal Mail's director of external affairs and policy, expressed the organization's enthusiasm for the project: "Hornby trains have entertained millions of people, preserved the enduring romance of rail travel, and become a genuine cultural icon of British design and imagination. Each of these commemorative stamps celebrates a unique piece of history, highlighting Hornby's exceptional craftsmanship and its significant role in British culture across multiple generations."

Martyn Weaver, representing Hornby, shared the company's appreciation: "Seeing Hornby Model Railways celebrated on official Royal Mail stamps represents a tremendous honour for our organization. Hornby has been an integral part of British life for more than a century, inspiring creativity, craftsmanship, and lifelong interests in railways and modelling. These stamps recognize the enduring appeal of model railways and the important role this hobby continues to play in bringing people together across different generations."

Pat Hammond, archivist to the Train Collectors Society, added historical perspective: "The Hornby brand has now surpassed one hundred years of continuous operation, which represents a major achievement in British manufacturing history. It has become an essential part of Britain's industrial and cultural heritage, and we sincerely hope this legacy continues for many years to come."
