Amanda Holden's Adventurous Sister Survives Everest Earthquake and Car Crash

Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden's sister Debbie, aged 54, has led an extraordinarily adventurous life as a Thailand diving instructor, surviving both the Nepal earthquake and a serious car crash in Cornwall. While Amanda regularly shares glimpses of her glamorous lifestyle with followers, her relationship with younger sister Debbie has remained more private, despite their close bond.

A Tight-Knit Sibling Connection

Amanda and Debbie Holden were born just twelve months apart and shared a challenging upbringing with their father Frank, who struggled with alcohol dependency. Their parents' marriage ended in 1976 after six years together, with their mother Judith citing unreasonable behaviour reportedly linked to his drinking problems. Primarily raised by their mother and stepfather Les, the sisters' connection deepened further in 2012 when Amanda came perilously close to death due to complications during childbirth.

Debbie's Global Adventures Begin

Debbie departed Britain in January 2000 with what she described in an archived blog entry as 'a 50 litre backpack and very rough plan.' Her adventurous spirit carried her across multiple continents, from Australia and Indonesia to the west African country of Mauritania. She ultimately settled in Koh Lanta, Thailand, where she now earns her living as a diving instructor. Known for her thirst for adventure, Debbie has worked internationally and at numerous festivals, though her overseas relocation wasn't quite the idyllic lifestyle change she'd envisioned.

Surviving Multiple Life-Threatening Incidents

In 2016, Debbie was involved in a potentially fatal single-vehicle collision in Cornwall that left her in 'critical but stable' condition at a local hospital. Amanda maintained a bedside vigil throughout her recovery, having rushed to her side after learning of the accident while attending Simon Cowell's 57th birthday celebration. Writing exclusively in a column for The Sun, Amanda reflected: 'It was one of those times where your life turns upside down in an instant.' She praised the staff at Derriford Hospital, adding: 'Not for the first time in my life, I felt so grateful for our wonderful NHS.'

Just one year before the accident, the seasoned adventurer had another brush with death during an earthquake in Nepal. Debbie had planned to trek up to Everest base camp, which was later devastated by an avalanche triggered by the earthquakes, but had to abandon her journey due to altitude sickness. Amanda shared this news on ITV's This Morning, struggling to keep her emotions in check as she explained that her sister had been caught in an aftershock.

Sisterly Bonds and Social Media Moments

Amanda confessed that her sister is much more of an 'outdoors type' than herself and had saved up for the Everest climb because it was her dream. She said: 'She's adventurous to say the least. She'd saved up and this was something she was desperate to do.' Recently, Amanda has been delighting fans by sharing several photos of the two of them together on social media. In 2018, she posted pictures on her Instagram page of the pair enjoying drinks together, and three years later, she shared images of them looking remarkably alike.

She also posted a video of Debbie riding a moped with her pet dog Fitzy in Thailand on her Instagram Stories, captioning it with a 'crying with laughter' emoji. Debbie reposted the video on her own page, commenting: 'Biker dog...a perfect day out with Fitzy.' In addition, Amanda shared a photo of Debbie in a bikini, declaring that her sister was 'living her best life.'

Despite the terrifying incidents that have marked Debbie's adventurous journey, the Holden sisters continue to maintain their close bond, with Amanda regularly treating followers to rare glimpses of their relationship through carefully curated social media posts that highlight both their similarities and their dramatically different lifestyle choices.
