Brenda Edwards Shares Heartfelt Journey of Love and Resilience
Brenda Edwards, the beloved Loose Women panellist, has opened up in an exclusive interview about her remarkable journey through laughter, loss, and finding love again. The 56-year-old former X Factor star, currently starring in Paddington: The Musical in London's West End, revealed intimate details during a glamorous photoshoot with Notebook magazine to celebrate International Women's Day.
A Platform for Presence and Healing
Since joining Loose Women in 2019, Brenda has become known for her bravery and honesty, discussing deeply personal topics including her stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis and the heartbreaking losses she has endured. "Loose Women is incredible at allowing women to remain present and seen," she explained, reflecting on how the show provided her with a platform to share her story when she initially appeared to talk about her cancer journey without any prior symptoms.
"It was about checking yourself," she emphasised, highlighting the importance of health awareness. Despite the nerve-wracking nature of sharing such personal experiences, Brenda finds joy in her role, describing her fellow panellists as "besties" and acknowledging her reputation as the "loud one" who often sets off laughter among the cast.
From Introverted Extrovert to Musical Healing
Surprisingly, Brenda identifies as an introverted extrovert, attributing her shyness to losing people at a young age. "I'm a shy person, but if I'm relaxed I'll talk all day," she confessed. Music and food remain her great passions, serving as therapeutic outlets that bring her out of herself. She recalled a memorable moment singing on Loose Women with Anastacia, bonding over their shared breast cancer journeys. "Music is a great healer for her, and it is for me too," she shared.
Despite facing cancer and profound grief, Brenda maintains a positive outlook. "You can wallow in self-pity, but I don't have time to do that," she stated, adding that she always remembers others may be worse off and need help. She finds comfort in hearing from viewers who respond to her stories, thanking her for sharing experiences similar to their own.
Strong Female Role Models and Family Legacy
Brenda credits the strong women in her life for lifting her up, particularly her aunties and grandmother who raised her after her parents died when she was just four years old. Her auntie Pam, an MBE and former RAF member whom she views as a mother figure, instilled in her the motto: "Pull yourself up, keep fighting." This philosophy has guided Brenda through life's challenges, including the loss of her beautiful son Jamal.
"It is hard. I don't have my mother, and of course I lost my beautiful son Jamal," she acknowledged. Yet she finds pride in motherhood, celebrating her wonderful daughter and the resilience that defines womanhood. "This is what being a woman is all about. You go through a lot, but you carry on," she affirmed.
A New Love Sent from Above
In a touching revelation, Brenda disclosed that she has found love again with a special someone she met just over a year ago. "I believe he's come at the right time, and I honestly believe my son sent him for me," she revealed emotionally. She described spooky similarities between her new partner's way of thinking and that of her late son Jamal, suggesting that "the stars have aligned" in this new relationship.
While acknowledging that losing her son feels like "walking around with this big gaping hole in my heart," Brenda expressed happiness at sharing lovely experiences with someone new. "It's a long time since I've been this happy," she confessed, marking a significant step in her healing journey.
Loose Women continues to air weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player, providing a platform for women's voices and stories like Brenda's.
