Comedian Katherine Ryan finds herself in a generational beauty clash as her teenage daughter has publicly declared her intention to undergo cosmetic enhancement, despite Ryan's own traumatic experience with the procedure.
A Mother's Warning Versus a Teen's Resolve
In a candid interview with The Times, 16-year-old Violet Ryan stated her firm plans for the future: 'I will definitely have lip filler when I’m 18. Just half a millilitre. It will look so nice!' This declaration comes in direct opposition to her mother's wishes, rooted in a painful personal history.
Katherine Ryan has spoken extensively about being scarred for life by 'really dodgy lip injections' she received at age 21. She attributes the botched work to a lack of both information and funds at the time. 'I don’t know what they injected in my lips,' she revealed, noting the permanent scar tissue that remains. Her first experience, as she previously described, involved 'this amateur doing it in a basement for cash' with what she believes was silicone.
The Legal Landscape and Family Dynamics
The comedian acknowledged that current UK regulations are on her side for now, stating 'Luckily, the law is on my side at this age.' However, Violet was quick to counter with the reality of the situation: 'Yes, but at 18 I don’t have to ask your permission.' This exchange highlights the impending shift in control as Violet approaches adulthood.
Ryan has tried to impart a longer-term perspective to her daughter and other teenagers, echoing advice from her own mother. 'I tell 16-year-olds... you think you won’t care what you look like when you’re 40 because that’s basically the grave — but you do still care. And you need to make decisions at 16 for the rest of your life,' she explained.
Broader Beauty Philosophies and Procedures
The interview also touched on their wider attitudes towards beauty and cosmetic work. Violet admitted to being a fan of sun tanning but showed awareness of the risks, stating she now uses SPF 50 on her face and SPF 30 on her body to prevent wrinkles.
Katherine Ryan, no stranger to cosmetic procedures herself, discussed her positive experiences alongside the negative. She expressed immense satisfaction with her breast implants, saying 'I absolutely loved getting breast implants... it really did transform my life.' She credited this success to thorough research and a 'really great board-certified surgeon,' emphasising she was always 'pretty conservative' in her goals.
The comedian also revealed she plans to have a facelift 'very soon,' after gifting her mother the same procedure for her birthday at a cost of £50,000. Ryan maintains a defiant attitude towards critics of her appearance, stating 'I’m impervious to criticism... I really don’t care.'
Violet is Ryan's daughter from a previous relationship. The comedian also shares son Fred, four, and daughters Fenna, two, and five-month-old Holland Juliette with her husband Bobby Kootstra.
