Kiefer Sutherland Arrested Again: A Look at His Decades of Legal Troubles
Kiefer Sutherland arrested in Hollywood altercation

Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland has been arrested once again, this time following a confrontation with a rideshare driver in Los Angeles. The incident adds another chapter to the 59-year-old star's extensive history of legal problems spanning nearly four decades.

The Latest Hollywood Arrest

Kiefer Sutherland was taken into custody early on Monday in Los Angeles after an alleged dispute with a rideshare driver. The altercation occurred near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood. Police confirmed the actor is suspected of assaulting the driver and entering the vehicle without permission.

Authorities arrested Sutherland on suspicion of felony criminal threats. The two-time Emmy winner, famous for roles in 24 and Designated Survivor, posted bail set at $50,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 2.

A History of Legal Issues

This recent arrest is far from an isolated incident for the son of late acting legend Donald Sutherland. His encounters with the law form a consistent pattern:

  • 1989: Arrested for alcohol-related reckless driving and possession of a loaded weapon in Los Angeles. He pleaded no contest to the driving charge.
  • 1993: Another arrest for alcohol-related reckless driving, resulting in a no contest plea and 200 hours of community service.
  • 2004: Arrested for driving under the influence, leading to probation and a court-ordered treatment programme.

The 2007 Drunk Driving Conviction

The most significant legal episode prior to this week occurred in 2007. After a September 2007 incident where he was caught driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit, Sutherland entered a no contest plea. He received a 30-day sentence, which was extended to 48 days after he violated probation from his 2004 arrest.

He served his time at Glendale City Jail, with a police officer later describing him as a "model prisoner" who was "very humble" and handled laundry duties. Upon his release in January 2008, an officer noted he "looked like he was glad to be out."

In a statement at the time, Sutherland expressed deep regret: "I’m very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited... I’m deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers." As part of his plea deal, he underwent an 18-month alcohol education programme and weekly therapy.

Reflecting on the experience during a 2008 talk show appearance, Sutherland offered a wry assessment: "Jail is not that. It’s exactly as advertised."

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Kiefer Sutherland for further comment on this latest arrest. The actor, who won a Primetime Emmy for his iconic role as Jack Bauer in 24, now awaits his next court date as this long-running legal narrative continues.
