Meghan Markle's Estranged Father Discovers Late-Life Romance with Filipino Caregiver
Thomas Markle, the 81-year-old estranged father of Meghan Markle, has found romantic happiness with a Filipino nurse thirty-five years his junior. The retired Hollywood lighting director, who has endured years of emotional anguish following his public fallout with his daughter, now describes himself as "blessed and beyond happy" in his new relationship.
A Chance Meeting During Recovery
Mr. Markle met Rio Canedo, a 46-year-old mother of two, in mid-December last year while recovering from life-threatening surgery to amputate his left leg below the knee. The procedure became necessary after a massive blood clot blocked blood supply to his foot, nearly costing him his life. After four days in intensive care and weeks in hospital, he was transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility in Cebu, Philippines, where Rio works.
"I never expected to find joy and happiness again at my age," Mr. Markle confessed. "I felt neglected and sad for so many years but now I am enjoying life again. After so many tough times I feel truly blessed to have found someone very special who takes such good care of me."
Estrangement from Royal Daughter
The relationship emerges against the backdrop of Mr. Markle's prolonged estrangement from his daughter, which began after he suffered two heart attacks just before her May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. Unable to walk her down the aisle, he watched from afar as Meghan entered St. George's Chapel alone, escorted part-way by then-Prince Charles, with only her mother Doria Ragland representing her family.
Mr. Markle claims he made repeated private attempts to contact Meghan before going public, stating, "I still don't know why she ghosted me." In Prince Harry's memoir "Spare," the Duke of Sussex suggested Meghan "lost" her father after he began speaking to the press.
New Beginning in the Philippines
Following a devastating stroke in 2022 that left him unable to speak for weeks, Mr. Markle decided to relocate to the Philippines last year, seeking distance from constant reminders of his daughter and the grandchildren he has never met. Archie, six, and four-year-old Lilibet remain unknown to their grandfather, as does Prince Harry himself.
"After my stroke things were not great," Mr. Markle explained. "I wanted to go to the other side of the world to a place where the people are kind. The Philippines have a gentler way of life. I never expected to meet Rio and have my life changed in such a wonderful way."
Daily Life and Care
Now sharing a comfortable hotel-style room on the twelfth floor of the rehabilitation centre, the couple displays obvious affection and companionship. Rio constantly attends to Mr. Markle's needs, implementing a strict no-sugar diet that has helped him lose significant weight, hiding chocolate treats to ration them to one piece daily.
Even while battling pneumonia, Mr. Markle remains positive: "I finally feel safe and well-cared for. I've got pneumonia but I'm not feeling sorry for myself because I have Rio taking such good care of me. I hardly watch the news. I live in a world where people are kind to each other."
Moving Forward from Past Pain
The retired lighting director, who won three Emmy awards during his career, has removed all photographs of Meghan that once adorned his walls. "Yes, family is important, but how long can you live in pain? Sometimes you have to move on. I have moved on," he stated.
He maintains regular contact with Samantha, his eldest daughter from his first marriage who lives in Florida with multiple sclerosis, and receives weekly visits from his son Tom Markle Jr., who lives just twenty minutes away. Both children from his first marriage approve of his relationship with Rio.
Unaware of Royal Connections
Remarkably, Rio knew nothing of Mr. Markle's royal connections when they first met. "I didn't know who he was when I met him," she admitted. "Here in the Philippines Meghan and Harry are not a big deal. Mr. Markle is a kind man. All the nurses and staff love him. He's funny."
A divorcee with a 16-year-old son aspiring to become a teacher and a 22-year-old daughter studying pharmacy, Rio describes her feelings simply: "I care deeply for him."
Facing Criticism with Resilience
Mr. Markle anticipates backlash from the so-called "Sussex Squad" - online supporters of Meghan and Harry known for aggressive trolling - but remains undeterred. "I know some people will say hurtful things but I don't care," he declared. "The haters will hate but, to be honest, I don't give a damn. Life is for living. There's nothing more important in life than love."
He added, "I want to talk about this because I never thought I would ever be happy again. I want people to know you're never too old to find peace and love. There's a lot of negative things going on in the world and if my story can give a little hope to one person then I'm happy."
Future Plans and Reflections
Looking ahead, Mr. Markle hopes to take Rio to America once his health improves. Currently undergoing physiotherapy three times weekly and preparing for aqua therapy, he anticipates being fitted with a prosthetic limb later this year.
When asked about potential marriage, he responded thoughtfully: "I would marry Rio if it was beneficial to her. But it's not something we've discussed. For now we are just enjoying life. I am grateful every morning I wake up and feel safe and cared for. Rio has made me very happy."
Reflecting on his situation with poignant perspective, Mr. Markle observed, "It makes me sad that King Charles has only met Archie and Lilibet once or twice. How strange it is that me, over here in my little world, and him, the King of England, are both in the same boat. We both can't see our grandkids."
Despite everything, he maintains, "I love Meghan. She is my daughter. But I don't know how much time I have left and I want to spend what time I have being happy. Rio makes me happy."
