Queen Camilla has left royal fans astonished after she was spotted walking casually through an airport terminal upon her return from a whirlwind four-day state visit to the United States. The Queen, who travelled back to the UK while King Charles flew to Bermuda for further engagements, was seen at Washington Dulles International Airport on Thursday evening, still wearing the blue ensemble she had donned earlier that day to bid farewell to President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
A Relaxed Departure
An onlooker captured the moment on video and shared it on Instagram with the caption: “Just the Queen casually walking past me at the airport.” The post quickly went viral, with many commenting on the lack of “fuss and drama” surrounding her exit. One admirer remarked on her “unruffled and relaxed” demeanour, while others praised her approachable nature.
Camilla’s subdued departure stood in stark contrast to the King’s exit from the United States. Charles arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland aboard President Trump’s helicopter, where he was greeted by an honour guard. He was met by Chief of Protocol Monica Crowley and UK Ambassador Christian Turner, who officially bid him farewell before he boarded his flight to Bermuda. The King received a full armed forces honour cordon, a red carpet, and music from the US Air Force Band, waving from the top of the aircraft steps before disappearing inside.
Praise from President Trump
Earlier in the day, Queen Camilla had also received high praise from President Trump during the formal farewell at the White House. As the King and Queen departed the South Portico, Trump complimented Camilla, saying to King Charles: “It’s been good. It’s been important. Look at everybody,” before pointing to the Queen and adding: “I don’t know how she does it, she’s amazing.”
Turning to Camilla, Trump continued: “It was fantastic. I look forward to seeing you again. Thank you for making it a success. Love to the grandchildren.” The exchange was interpreted by lip reader Jeremy Freeman, who shared the remarks with the Mirror.
A Successful State Visit
The King and Queen’s state visit included engagements in Washington DC, New York, and Virginia, where they met with political leaders and attended cultural events. The trip was widely regarded as a diplomatic success, strengthening ties between the United Kingdom and the United States.
While Charles continues his royal duties in Bermuda, Camilla’s low-key return to the UK has captured the public’s imagination, showcasing a side of royalty that many find refreshingly ordinary.
