BTS Launches Global Tour in South Korea After Military Service Hiatus
BTS Kicks Off World Tour After Four-Year Break

Thousands of enthusiastic fans gathered in a stadium near Seoul on Thursday, defying torrential rain to witness the highly anticipated return of global K-pop sensation BTS. The concert officially launched their expansive world tour, marking the group's first headline performance since their 2021–22 Permission to Dance on Stage tour concluded nearly four years ago.

Rain-Soaked Return to the Stage

Despite challenging weather conditions, the venue with a capacity exceeding 40,000 spectators was packed to capacity. The event represents a significant milestone for the seven-member group—RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—who have recently completed South Korea's mandatory military service requirements.

Military Service Completion and Comeback

Six of the seven BTS members fulfilled their compulsory military duties, with Suga being the final member discharged in June 2025 after serving as a social service agent due to a shoulder injury. In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 must complete up to 21 months of military service under a conscription system designed to deter potential aggression from North Korea.

The concert follows closely on the heels of their official comeback event—a free performance at Seoul's Gwanghwamun Square less than a month prior. This South Korean leg of the tour will continue through April 12 before the group embarks on an international journey spanning multiple continents.

New Album and Chart Success

The performance featured material drawn from both their extensive catalog and their latest release, the fifth studio album titled "ARIRANG." Named after a centuries-old Korean folk song considered an unofficial anthem across the Korean peninsula, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Additionally, the single "Swim" from the new album has achieved top chart positions, continuing the group's remarkable track record of commercial success. BTS first entered the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017 with "DNA," becoming the first Korean boy band to accomplish this feat.

Global Tour Economics and Itinerary

Industry analysts project that the world tour could generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue per quarter as it progresses through dozens of scheduled performances across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Following the South Korean shows, the tour will proceed to Tokyo before traversing North America, Europe, South America, and additional Asian destinations.

The group is scheduled to perform in Australia during early 2027, with the tour concluding in Manila the following March. This extensive itinerary underscores BTS's continued global appeal and the dedicated support of their international fan base, known as the "Army."

Historical Context and Legacy

BTS—short for Bangtan Sonyeondan, meaning "Bulletproof Boy Scouts" in Korean—debuted in June 2013 with the hip-hop influenced single album "2 Cool 4 Skool." The group released three full-length projects before gaining significant momentum with their 2016 album "Wings."

Their 2017 American Music Awards performance further solidified their international presence and expanded their already substantial global following. The current world tour represents both a celebration of their musical evolution and a triumphant return to live performances after their extended hiatus for military service obligations.
