Kris Marshall Confronts Beyond Paradise Fan Complaints as Show Returns

Kris Marshall, the star of the popular BBC series Beyond Paradise, has directly addressed what he describes as "complaints" from dedicated viewers of the show. This comes as the program prepares to launch its highly anticipated fourth season, continuing its successful run as a spin-off from the beloved detective drama Death in Paradise.

International Audiences Voice Frustration Over Delays

During a recent appearance on the TV Reload podcast in 2025, host Benjamin Morris highlighted a specific grievance from fans in Australia. Morris noted that viewers Down Under were expressing frustration about delayed airings compared to the UK schedule. He remarked to Marshall, "You’re on a show now that’s so popular that when I was doing the research for this, there were people in Australia complaining, 'We’re delayed'. You know you're on a good show when the complaint is, 'We ain’t getting it fast enough'."

Marshall confirmed he was aware of these concerns, responding, "I’ve read a couple of those complaints myself. I think the last series, season three, ended about two or three weeks ago, so a few weeks behind the UK but not too much really and we will begin filming again soon." The actor's acknowledgment underscores the show's global appeal, with significant audiences in North America, Canada, and Australia contributing to its millions of viewers worldwide.

Spoiler Alerts and Production Challenges

In the same interview, Marshall revealed a recurring issue he faces with producers: his tendency to accidentally reveal plot details. He admitted, "I get into trouble about it all the time, honestly, I've had so many dressings down behind closed doors with the amount of spoilers I'm dropping. I need more media training or something." This candid confession came after he expressed fear that he had "dropped another spoiler" during the conversation, highlighting the tight control over storylines in modern television production.

Comparing Filming Locations: Guadeloupe vs. Devon and Cornwall

Reflecting on his career, Marshall contrasted his experiences filming Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise. For Death in Paradise, which he starred in for three series before departing in 2017, production took place on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. This location often kept him away from his family for extended periods. In contrast, Beyond Paradise films in Devon and Cornwall, allowing him to travel home every other weekend.

He explained to the Mirror, "Actually, I love it. I get the beauty of seeing my family every other weekend, but then I also get the solitude I enjoy at the end of a really hard working week. I rent the same place every year in a wonderful village near where Beyond Paradise is filmed." Marshall described the area as having a non-touristy beach with a rocky shoreline and a "wonderful little surf break," which he frequents regularly.

Mental Health Benefits of the Great Outdoors

Marshall also opened up about how the natural environment of Devon and Cornwall positively impacts his mental health, especially during demanding filming schedules. He shared, "I was a big surfer growing up. I wasn't particularly good, but I loved it. I did it all over the world for fun. I love the sea. So every morning before work, I'm in the sea. I'm in the sea after work. I go hiking up on the Moors."

Emphasizing the importance of outdoor activities, he added, "It's a huge part of who I am. We talk a lot about mental health these days and how the great outdoors is so good for your mental health. When you're on a big shoot like Beyond Paradise, which is 70 hours a week for 23 weeks straight, one after the other, while it looks and is bucolic and lovely, it's also quite hard work. I use Devon and Cornwall to keep my mental health stable." This insight sheds light on the personal strategies actors employ to manage the pressures of intensive television production.

Legacy and Future of the Series

Marshall first reprised his role as DI Humphrey Goodman for Beyond Paradise in 2022, following his initial stint on Death in Paradise from 2014 to 2017. His departure from the original series made way for Ardal O'Hanlon, who later left after three series, with Ralf Little and Don Gilet subsequently taking on lead roles. The success of Beyond Paradise has cemented its status as a standout hit in the detective genre, with its fourth season poised to continue captivating audiences both domestically and internationally.
