Outlander Withdrawal? 4 Must-Watch Historical Romance Shows

As the acclaimed Scottish television series Outlander approaches its series finale, devoted viewers are already contemplating what to watch next. To assist fellow fans, television enthusiast Liv Grace has compiled a list of four shows she describes as 'just as good' as the beloved time-travel drama, offering similar themes of historical romance, adventure, and complex relationships.

The End of an Era for Outlander

Outlander, which premiered in 2014, is currently airing its eighth and final season, with the concluding episode scheduled for release on 8 May. Based on Diana Gabaldon's historical fantasy novel series, the show follows Claire Randall, a British combat nurse from 1945 who mysteriously travels back to 1743 Scotland during her second honeymoon. There, she encounters a charismatic Highland warrior and becomes entangled in a sweeping rebellion, captivating audiences with its blend of romance, history, and fantasy.

Poldark: A Cornish Historical Drama

"Okay, the first one is called Poldark, this is by far the most similar to Outlander that I've seen," Liv stated enthusiastically. This British historical drama, adapted from Winston Graham's novels, follows Ross Poldark, an 18th-century soldier returning to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War to discover his father deceased and his beloved engaged to his cousin. The narrative revolves around Poldark's efforts to reconstruct his life, develop a copper mine, and pursue romance with a former kitchen maid, all while navigating intricate emotional entanglements.

"This show is so good," Liv praised. "The plot is ten out of ten, it's a historical romance, definitely watch it." Poldark is accessible for streaming on Netflix and available for purchase through Amazon Prime Video or the Apple TV Store.

Providence Falls: A Supernatural Romance

Next, Liv highlighted a shorter series produced by Hallmark, renowned for its romantic films. Providence Falls centres on Liam, a 19th-century Irish thief dispatched by angels to contemporary Oregon to ensure his past-life love, Cora, marries her destined partner, Finn. As Cora's new police colleague, Liam assists in solving a murder investigation while grappling with his enduring affection for her.

"It's actually good, it's three episodes, but they're longer," Liv explained, noting that each episode resembles a feature film. "And very similar vibes to Outlander, I was very pleasantly surprised." The series is streamable on Hallmark+ in the United States, though availability in the United Kingdom is currently limited.

My Lady Jane: A Comedic Tudor Reimagining

"The next one is My Lady Jane, and I loved this show," Liv declared. This series presents a humorous, fantasy-infused reinterpretation of Tudor history, where Lady Jane Grey evades her tragic destiny. Thrust into an arranged marriage with the enigmatic Guildford Dudley, Jane ascends to the English throne for nine days, manoeuvring through political schemes, supernatural shapeshifters known as Ethians, and romantic developments to preserve herself and her realm.

My Lady Jane is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The Artful Dodger: A Medical Historical Drama

The final recommendation on Liv's list is The Artful Dodger, a series she celebrated for its recent second season premiere. Functioning as a sequel to Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, the show depicts an adult Jack Dawkins, portrayed by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, practising surgery in 1850s Australia. His quest for a respectable existence is challenged when his former criminal guide, Fagin, played by David Thewlis, reappears to lure him back into illicit activities.

"So good. It's sort of like a medical historical drama, but there's romance, there's drama, there's everything. Everything that you would want in a show is in this," Liv remarked. Both seasons of The Artful Dodger can be streamed on Disney+.

With Outlander concluding, these four series provide ample historical romance and drama to satisfy fans seeking new narratives reminiscent of the iconic show.
