Lucie Rose Speaks Out on Marriage to Richard Keys
Lucie Rose, the wife of controversial former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, has publicly discussed her marriage for the first time, addressing the significant age gap and dismissing labels such as 'trophy wife' and 'gold digger'. Rose, 37, is a partner in private funds at a major New York law firm and has taken issue with these characterisations, which have followed her relationship with Keys, who is 68.
Addressing the Age Gap and Public Perception
On the topic of their 31-year age difference, Keys remarked, 'It baffles people, but I don’t feel it. I never have.' Rose responded with a light-hearted comment, saying, 'That’s because you’re my adult toddler.' Their relationship first gained public attention in 2016 when reports surfaced that Keys was having an affair with Rose, who was then a young lawyer and a close friend of his daughter Jemma. This occurred while his then-wife Julia was undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.
Keys and Rose met in Qatar, where he had been living for 13 years until recently and where she was working for the Qatar Investment Authority, the country’s sovereign wealth fund. The couple eventually married in 2023. In a revealing interview with The Telegraph, Keys disputed claims that he left Julia while she was seriously ill, stating, 'I didn’t leave Julia dying of cancer, or suffering with cancer.'
Reflections on the Sky Sports Scandal
Keys' career at Sky Sports ended in 2011 after he made derogatory comments about female referee Sian Massey-Ellis and other women in the industry. Believing his microphone was off, he said, ‘Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.’ He also made remarks about West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady, and a clip emerged of him using vulgar language towards Jamie Redknapp. When asked about this episode more than a decade later, Rose emphasised the importance of personal growth, saying, 'For me, the most important thing is people’s ability to change and evolve.'
She added, 'If I had met someone who was trying to justify that culture, there wouldn’t have been anywhere for us to go. But that wasn’t the person I met. I met someone who was traumatised, to an extent, by the culture he lived through. Except somehow he is marked as being the cause of it. I don’t think that’s fair – it’s not who he is.'
Impact on Family and Personal Lives
The affair had significant repercussions for Keys' family. His ex-wife Julia claimed that the relationship ruined the career of their daughter Jemma, a Hollyoaks actress, leading to alcoholism and depression. Jemma also faced legal action over abusive texts sent to Rose, though charges were later dropped. Julia, who stood by Keys during the 2011 scandal, published an infidelity survival guide called The MANScript in 2018, detailing the split and its effects on their children.
In the book, she wrote, 'Richard's affair didn't just devastate my world, but the world of our children Jemma and Josh too. It is only now, two years on, that he has admitted he did have an affair with Lucie, as well as acknowledging his deceit and the damage it has caused.'
Future Aspirations and Fatherhood
In the interview, Keys also expressed a desire to become a father again, despite being nearly 70. He said, 'If something of that nature happened, I would be a very, very happy man. I’ve looked around at men my age who have entered the fatherhood phase for a second time, and they all seem to be a lot more relaxed. They’re more understanding of the role they have. I’ve come to the conclusion that when you’re in your 20s, 30s, you’re pushing your shoulders to the wheel and you haven’t got time to be a good father. I’ve got plenty of time.'
This candid discussion sheds light on the complexities of their relationship, the controversies that have surrounded it, and their hopes for the future, offering a deeper insight into a marriage that has captivated public interest.
