Spanish media have voiced criticism of Anthony Gordon's performances for England at the World Cup, raising questions about Barcelona's decision to sign the winger instead of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford. Gordon, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle for £69.3 million, produced an underwhelming display in England's goalless draw with Ghana on Tuesday night.
Gordon's Lacklustre Display Under Scrutiny
Gordon started the match but failed to make a significant impact, leading to widespread criticism from Spanish outlets. La Vanguardia, a Barcelona-based publication, described his performance as "lacklustre," noting that "as against Croatia, the winger failed to make a significant impact on the game. Although he was more involved in the play, he was imprecise in some of his dribbling, and his assists, while more purposeful, were wasted by his teammates."
Madrid-based AS offered mixed feedback, stating Gordon was "excellent defensively but lacklustre in attack." Las Razon highlighted how Ghana "shut down the flanks," with full-backs Marvin Senaya and Gideon Mensah "effectively marking Gordon and Madueke." ABC suggested Gordon "lacked the necessary finesse" to break through Ghana's defence and labelled his tame second-half shot as "tame."
Rashford's Impressive Loan Spell at Barcelona
Rashford, 28, spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Barcelona, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists as the club won La Liga. Despite this, Barcelona opted against signing him permanently, leaving Rashford's future uncertain. He is set to return to Manchester United after the World Cup, but his high wages—around £325,000 per week—and United's £40 million valuation pose obstacles for potential suitors. Tottenham have expressed interest, according to The i Paper.
Rashford has been limited to substitute appearances for England, playing only seven minutes against Ghana after coming on for Noni Madueke in the 83rd minute. Gordon was replaced by Bukayo Saka in the 65th minute.
England's Group Stage Outlook
England's draw with Ghana followed a 4-2 victory over Croatia, leaving them well-placed to qualify for the last 32. Manager Thomas Tuchel faces a selection dilemma for the group decider against Panama on Saturday. Victory would likely secure top spot in Group L, offering a theoretically easier knockout path. Given Gordon's struggles, Rashford may earn his first start of the tournament.
