King Charles Receives Blue Peter Green Badge for Environmental Efforts

King Charles Honoured with Prestigious Blue Peter Green Badge

King Charles III has been presented with a prestigious Blue Peter Green Badge in recognition of his extensive work in environmental protection and sustainability. The award was given during a visit to Dumfries House in East Ayrshire, where the King placed a second Blue Peter badge into a time capsule to mark the 35th anniversary of The King's Foundation.

Recognition for Environmental Leadership

The Green Badge specifically acknowledges King Charles's personal dedication to promoting nature and sustainable practices, particularly through initiatives led by The King's Foundation. During the ceremony, Blue Peter presenter Joel Mawhinney praised the monarch's efforts, stating: "In recognition of all the amazing work you do to protect the planet and lead us to a more sustainable and healthy future, as well as your work inspiring the next generation of students and young people through The King's Foundation, we would love and be honoured to give you your very own Green Blue Peter Badge."

Foundation Activities and Time Capsule

The King's itinerary included visits to the Pierburg Education Centre and Kauffman Education Garden, where he met primary six pupils participating in the foundation's 'Growing Together, Cooking Together' programme. He also engaged with Liza Kengran, the foundation's sustainable food systems curriculum manager. The time capsule containing the second Blue Peter badge is destined to remain buried on the estate for a century before being unearthed by future generations.

Longstanding Environmental Advocacy

King Charles has been a long-standing champion of environmental causes, particularly through efforts to reduce food waste. Notably, he established the Coronation Food Project in 2023, which actively redistributes surplus food to communities in need across Merseyside, Birmingham, and London. This initiative reflects his deep commitment to sustainable practices and community support.

Previous Royal Recognition

This is not the first time members of the royal family have been honoured by Blue Peter. Both the King and Queen previously received Gold Blue Peter Badges in Liverpool in 2023. The King was recognised for his environmental work and support for young people through The King's Trust, while the Queen was awarded for her efforts highlighting the importance of literacy and reading from a young age.

Commemorating Queen Elizabeth II

In a separate but related event, King Charles recently joined a group of centenarians at Buckingham Palace to mark what would have been Queen Elizabeth II's 100th birthday. The King shared a sweet moment with 100-year-old Joan Illingworth, helping her cut a birthday cake after she confessed she could not manage the task herself. Illingworth was among three centenarians at the event who share the late queen's birthday.

Charitable Tributes and Personal Moments

The event also remembered Queen Elizabeth through charities she served during her 70-year reign, including the Royal College of Nursing, Victoria Cross and George Cross Association, and the Royal Ballet. In a poignant moment, The Princess of Wales shared comfort with former Met Police officer Tony Gledhill, a trustee of the VC and GC association, who clutched her after revealing his wife of 67 years had recently passed away.

The Blue Peter Green Badge presentation underscores King Charles's enduring commitment to environmental sustainability and his role in inspiring future generations through educational and charitable initiatives.
