Beverley Callard has shared a heartbreaking realisation amid her breast cancer battle. The actress, 69, announced in February that she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, almost 40 years after overcoming cervical cancer. She has been open with fans throughout her ordeal.
Treatment and Diagnosis
The star, best known for playing Liz McDonald on Coronation Street, underwent her first treatment in March. After a delay in results, she discovered the cancer had spread to a lymph node. However, in a positive update last week, tests showed the cancer was "on low numbers," allowing her to begin radiotherapy.
Emotional Moments
Beverley, who recently moved to Ireland with her husband Jon McEwan for her role in Fair City, explained that she put a full-length mirror in her new bathroom—something she normally avoids. Seeing herself in the mirror left her upset. She also became emotional while unpacking bras, realising she might not need them again.
In an Instagram video, she said: "I had a shower and washed my hair. I put a really long mirror in the bathroom... I saw myself in the mirror, got all upset and thought 'I never thought I'd look like this...' I got a grip again. Started to unpack again, unpacked loads of shoes which made me really happy. But I then got to underwear and bras and I began to sink again as I thought 'Will I ever need it?'"
Support from Husband
Despite the emotional day, Beverley ended on a positive note. Her husband Jon transformed a "drab" room into a comfortable space for her radiotherapy recovery. She praised partners of cancer patients, saying: "We should all think about partners... they need to be up there as well."
She captioned her post: "Bit of a long one today! It's been an up and down kinda weekend! My Jon has done such a fantastic job of making a comfortable, cosy space for me for my recovery. I feel very lucky."
Diagnosis Revelation
Beverley first revealed her diagnosis in February on RTE's Late Late Show. She received the news just minutes before going on set for Fair City. She said: "My consultant rang me and said, 'you've got to come back to the UK'... I was diagnosed with breast cancer. But I'm fine, absolutely fine."
