Gemma Numan Faces Partial Paralysis Following Spinal Surgery
Gemma Numan, the wife of iconic musician Gary Numan, has been left partially paralyzed after undergoing spinal surgery. The 57-year-old shared the distressing news with her followers on Instagram, revealing that her left arm is now paralyzed following a multi-level discectomy procedure.
This surgery, which involves the removal of damaged or herniated discs, has left Gemma facing significant challenges. She expressed the severity of her situation in her social media post, stating, "No one can ever understand how s**t it is and not glamorous."
Family Challenges and Geographic Complications
The couple, who married in 1997 and have three daughters named Persia, Raven, and Echo, typically reside in Los Angeles. However, Gemma underwent her surgery in the United Kingdom and has been unable to travel back to the United States since September of last year.
In her emotional update, Gemma wrote, "Gutted! I miss my animals so much, it makes me feel sick! Gary has looked after me here in the UK the whole time." She also expressed gratitude toward her support network, adding, "It couldn't have happened without you!"
Multiple Surgeries and Ongoing Treatment
This represents Gemma's third surgical procedure since August of the previous year, with the mother-of-three informing her followers that she still faces another operation in the future. The cumulative effect of these medical interventions has created a prolonged period of recovery and uncertainty for the family.
Recent Family Tragedy
This health crisis comes just months after Gary Numan, aged 67, announced the sudden death of his younger brother, John, in November. The musician had previously broken down in tears during a Birmingham performance of his song "Please Push No More," telling the audience he had received "the worst news ever."
In an emotional social media post, Gary later detailed the heartbreaking circumstances of his brother's passing. "He had spent the evening with me at my Telekon show, catching up, swapping stories, telling me about his newly found love of reading," Gary wrote.
He continued with the tragic details: "I hugged him at the door of our tour bus, I think it was about 12:20am, asked him how far he had to walk to get to his car (I always worried about him walking the streets at night), it was not far apparently, we said goodbye and I watched him walk away."
"Sadly he never made it to his car, betrayed by his own heart. It will haunt me forever that we may have driven off not knowing that he was lying in a rainy street just yards away. Luckily a kind person saw him and called an ambulance, but it was too late."
The combination of these two significant family crises—Gemma's ongoing health battle and the recent loss of Gary's brother—has created an exceptionally challenging period for the Numan family as they navigate both medical recovery and personal grief simultaneously.
