Indonesian Rescuers Launch Urgent Search for 27 People Drifting on Raft
Rescue teams in Indonesia are racing against time to locate 27 individuals believed to be adrift on a raft in Indonesian waters, following the sinking of their passenger boat in rough seas. The incident occurred a day earlier, prompting a large-scale search operation involving multiple vessels and local assistance.
Details of the Sinking Incident
The passenger boat, identified as the Nazila 05, departed from Taliabu port in North Maluku province shortly after dusk on Sunday. It was en route to Kema in North Sulawesi province before sinking in the northern waters of Taliabu Island. Muhammad Rizal, head of the search and rescue office in Palu city, confirmed the details, stating that the boat's captain reported the vessel sank after its bow was broken by high waves during severe weather conditions.
All 27 people aboard managed to evacuate using a longboat before the ship went down, Rizal explained. However, their current location remains unknown, he added, highlighting the urgency of the rescue efforts.
Rescue Operation Underway
According to relatives of the victims, the individuals had tied themselves to a raft to stay afloat. The National Search and Rescue Agency has deployed a rescue vessel toward the estimated location where the raft is believed to be drifting in choppy waters. The search team is also utilizing an inflatable boat and receiving assistance from local fishermen to broaden the search area.
Rizal noted that the Nazila 05 was frequently used to transport tourists and was known locally as a fishing or small passenger vessel. This incident underscores the challenges faced in Indonesia's maritime transportation system.
Broader Context of Maritime Safety in Indonesia
Indonesia, an archipelago comprising more than 17,000 islands, relies heavily on boats as a common form of transportation. However, the country often grapples with lax safety standards and issues related to overcrowding, leading to frequent accidents. This latest sinking adds to a series of maritime incidents that highlight the need for improved safety measures and more robust rescue capabilities in the region.
The search operation continues as rescuers work tirelessly to locate the missing individuals, hoping to bring them to safety amidst the challenging conditions of the open sea.
