Health authorities in Australia have issued an urgent warning to consumers to immediately dispose of a popular salad product sold nationwide after it was linked to dozens of salmonella infections.
Product Recall Details
Food Standards Australia has confirmed that Aussie Sprouts Alfalfa Sprouts 125g are connected to 44 cases of salmonella infection. The contaminated products were available at major supermarket chains including Woolworths, Coles, IGA and various independent grocers.
The affected alfalfa sprouts were distributed across multiple states and territories, including New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Northern Territory, the ACT and South Australia. All products subject to the warning are 125g varieties with use-by dates up to and including November 20.
Symptoms and Health Risks
NSW Health director Keira Glasgow has advised consumers to remain vigilant for symptoms of salmonella poisoning. 'Anyone who has consumed alfalfa sprouts should be on the lookout for symptoms, which include: headache; fever; stomach cramps; diarrhoea; nausea; and vomiting,' she stated.
Symptoms typically appear within six to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria and generally last about a week. While most people recover with rest and fluids, infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness.
Ms Glasgow emphasised that vulnerable individuals 'may need antibiotics from their doctor or, in more severe cases, hospitalisation'.
