Zelenskyy Confirms Russia-Ukraine Talks Stalled Amid Middle East Conflict
Zelenskyy: Russia-Ukraine Talks Stalled as Mideast Seeks Drone Aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared that a new round of U.S.-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled for this week, has been postponed indefinitely. The delay is attributed to the escalating war in the Middle East, which has diverted international attention from Europe's largest conflict since World War II.

Middle East Conflict Diverts Focus

Zelenskyy stated late Wednesday that the ongoing situation in Iran has created an unfavorable environment for diplomatic negotiations. "Right now, because of the situation around Iran, there are not yet the necessary signals for a trilateral meeting," he explained. "But as soon as the security situation and the overall political context allow us to resume that trilateral diplomatic work, it will be done." The Iran war, now in its sixth day, has shifted global focus away from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties with no imminent resolution in sight.

Kyiv's Drone Expertise in High Demand

Simultaneously, the United States and its Middle Eastern allies are actively seeking Ukraine's expertise in countering Iranian Shahed drones. Russia has deployed tens of thousands of these drones against Ukraine since the invasion began over four years ago, and Iran has retaliated with similar drones following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on its targets. Zelenskyy revealed that he has engaged in discussions with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait regarding potential cooperation in drone defense.

However, Zelenskyy emphasized that any Ukrainian assistance will be conditional. "We help to defend from war those who help us, Ukraine, bring a just end to the war" with Russia, he asserted. Assistance will only be provided if it does not compromise Ukraine's own defensive capabilities and if it strengthens Kyiv's diplomatic efforts to halt the Russian invasion.

Military Gains on the Front Line

Amid the diplomatic stalemate, Ukraine's military has made notable progress on the battlefield. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainian forces have recently pushed back Russian troops at various points along the approximately 1,250-kilometer (750-mile) front line. The Washington-based think tank reported this week that localized Ukrainian counterattacks in late February liberated more territory than was lost, with an estimated 257 square kilometers (100 square miles) recovered since January 1.

This development underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict, even as peace efforts remain stalled. Western governments and analysts continue to monitor the situation, noting that yearlong U.S.-led initiatives have yet to yield a breakthrough in ending the hostilities.
