Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has issued a direct appeal to the United States and Iran, urging both nations to "find a way through" following the collapse of critical peace negotiations over the weekend. The Prime Minister's call comes amid heightened tensions, as he emphasised the absolute necessity of preserving the fragile ceasefire currently holding in the Middle East conflict and warned sternly against any actions that could lead to further escalation.
Diplomatic Efforts After Negotiation Failure
The urgent diplomatic intervention followed a marathon 21-hour session of talks held in Pakistan between US and Iranian officials, which concluded in the early hours of Sunday without reaching any substantive agreement. US Vice-President JD Vance departed Islamabad empty-handed, with the primary sticking point reported to be Iran's continued refusal to commit to a verifiable pledge against developing nuclear weapons. This failure has cast a significant shadow of uncertainty over the stability of the already shaky two-week truce in the region.
In a detailed readout provided by a Downing Street spokeswoman, it was confirmed that Sir Keir discussed the stalled Washington-Tehran negotiations during a telephone conversation with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik al Said of Oman. "They discussed the peace talks held in Pakistan over the weekend and urged both sides to find a way through," the statement read. It further noted, "It was vital there was a continuation of the ceasefire, and that all parties avoided any further escalation, the leaders agreed."
Addressing the Strait of Hormuz Crisis
The high-level discussion also covered the critical and escalating situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global chokepoint for oil and gas shipments. The strategic waterway has been effectively closed due to Iran's military grip, triggering a sharp and sustained surge in global energy prices. Sultan Haitham provided the Prime Minister with an update on the volatile maritime situation.
"His majesty updated on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Prime Minister thanked him for Oman's efforts to rescue sailors from vessels in distress in the region," the readout stated. Reflecting on coordinated international efforts, Sir Keir confirmed that, following meetings convened by the Foreign Secretary and British military planners, partner nations are continuing to work diligently towards restoring long-term freedom of navigation in these crucial waters.
In a significant development, Britain is set to host further multilateral talks next week with a coalition of concerned countries, focusing specifically on strategies to safely reopen this essential maritime pinch-point and stabilise energy markets.
Starmer's Regional Diplomacy
This diplomatic outreach aligns with Sir Keir Starmer's recent visit to key allies in the Gulf region earlier this week. The Prime Minister engaged in substantive talks focused on how the international community can best support what he himself described as an exceptionally "fragile" ceasefire. His travels and communications underscore a concerted British effort to foster dialogue and prevent a dangerous relapse into full-scale conflict, highlighting the UK's active role in seeking regional stability and de-escalation during this precarious period.
