California Cosmetologist Found Guilty in Fatal Botched Cosmetic Procedure
A cosmetologist from California has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter following the death of a model who bore a striking resemblance to reality television star Kim Kardashian. The tragic incident occurred after an illegal cosmetic injection procedure went catastrophically wrong, leading to fatal complications.
Details of the Conviction and Charges
Vivian Alexandra Gomez, aged fifty-three, was found guilty on Tuesday of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2023 death of thirty-four-year-old Christina Ashten Gourkani. The verdict was delivered in San Mateo County Superior Court, with Judge Leland Davis presiding over the case. In addition to the manslaughter charge, Gomez was convicted of practicing medicine without a valid license and inflicting great bodily injury upon the victim.
Following the conviction, Gomez, who had previously been released on bail, was immediately ordered to report to jail to begin her custodial sentence. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for May fifth, where she could face up to seven years in state prison according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
The Fatal Procedure and Its Aftermath
Christina Ashten Gourkani, a popular OnlyFans model from San Jose, tragically died from respiratory failure and a pulmonary embolism just one day after undergoing an illegal gluteal silicone injection. Prosecutors revealed that Gourkani had discovered Gomez online and subsequently hired her to perform the unauthorised cosmetic enhancement.
On April nineteenth, 2023, Gomez travelled to San Francisco and met Gourkani and her fiancé at the Burlingame Marriott Hotel to carry out the procedure. According to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, Gourkani received at least two purported silicone injections during the session. Immediately following the injections, she became extremely ill, experiencing severe distress and convulsions.
Her fiancé urgently called emergency services, and Gourkani was rushed to Mills-Peninsula Hospital. Despite medical intervention, she passed away the following day. An autopsy later confirmed that her death resulted from an embolism and the presence of toxins in her system.
Social Media Fame and Family Tragedy
Gourkani had garnered millions of views across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube platforms due to her uncanny physical resemblance to celebrity Kim Kardashian. Her sudden and tragic death sent shockwaves through her online community and devastated her family.
In a heartfelt statement on a GoFundMe page, her family described receiving a frantic phone call in the early hours of the morning, with a relative screaming hysterically that "Ashten is dying." They characterised the call as one that "instantly shattered our world and will forever haunt our family for the rest of our lives." Initially, police investigated her death as a homicide linked to a medical procedure that had taken a disastrous turn.
Regulatory Warnings and Legal Proceedings
The United States Food and Drug Administration had issued explicit warnings in 2021 regarding the dangers of silicone injections for body enhancement. These procedures are not approved by the FDA and can lead to severe complications including pain, embolisms, disfigurement, stroke, and death. The regulatory body also highlighted that silicone can migrate through blood vessels to critical organs such as the lungs, heart, or brain, causing potentially fatal blockages.
Gomez was arrested mere hours after Gourkani’s death and was initially booked into the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. She is currently being held in San Mateo County jail awaiting her formal sentencing next month. This case underscores the grave risks associated with unlicensed cosmetic procedures and the devastating consequences that can arise from regulatory non-compliance.
