Father Receives Life Sentence for Murdering Premature Baby Daughter

A father has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his five-week-old baby daughter, who died after sustaining 47 rib fractures and other severe injuries during repeated assaults. Sean Jefferson, aged 35, was handed a minimum term of 22 years in prison for killing Darcy-Leigh Jefferson, who passed away in hospital on 29 March 2022.

Mother Jailed for Seven Years in Connection with Death

Darcy-Leigh's mother, Amy Clark, 34, was sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of causing or allowing the infant's death. The sentencing judge linked her behaviour to substance abuse issues. Both Clark and Jefferson had denied multiple charges prior to an almost two-month trial that concluded last month.

Stafford Crown Court heard during the trial that the baby suffered a catastrophic brain injury at her home in Burntwood, Staffordshire, on Mother's Day, two days before her death. Police described the crimes as an "appalling betrayal" of their daughter.

Details of the Assaults and Injuries

Darcy-Leigh, who was born five weeks premature, had a total of 47 rib fractures when she sustained the fatal brain injury. Jurors were informed that the child had been "physically assaulted on a repeated basis," with injuries resulting from being shaken violently or having her head struck against a surface.

In addition to the murder charge, Jefferson was found guilty of two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Clark, from Lichfield, Staffordshire, saw charges of murder or manslaughter dropped by prosecutors towards the end of the trial. She was also convicted of two counts of causing or allowing serious harm to a child.

Background and Police Response

Police were called by the ambulance service on 27 March 2022 after Darcy-Leigh collapsed at the Burntwood property. Her parents were arrested the following day, according to the Staffordshire force. The court heard that Clark had been struggling in the run-up to her daughter's death, sending Jefferson text messages about her exhaustion and his lack of support.

Jefferson responded with a message threatening to "put you 6ft underground" if she killed the baby through excessive drinking. The trial also revealed that both parents were taking drugs during their daughter's short life. Neither chose to give evidence in their defence.
