FedEx Driver's Harrowing Confession in Child Murder Case
In a chilling courtroom revelation, Tanner Horner, a 34-year-old FedEx delivery driver, confessed to the abduction and murder of seven-year-old Athena Strand from her North Texas home. His punishment trial, which commenced this week, heard gruesome details of the crime, alongside Horner's disturbing lament about missing his own son's life while facing prison.
Graphic Interrogation and Alter Ego Emergence
Surveillance footage from police custody, shown to jurors on Wednesday, captured Horner admitting "I killed her" and describing how he "kind of tossed her" remains into bushes. During a two-hour interrogation, detectives observed Horner's eyes roll back as he transformed into an alter ego named "Zero." Texas Ranger Joshua Espinoza testified that Horner's demeanor shifted dramatically, with his head tilting sideways and eyes rolling, prompting officers to address him as Zero to locate the victim's body.
Horner directed authorities to a wooded area near a cliff, where Athena Strand's naked body was found beneath water. When questioned as Zero, Horner denied sexual assault but implied responsibility for the killing, stating "Tanner wouldn't do it." The ranger thanked Zero for leading them to the girl, emphasizing the bizarre nature of the interrogation.
Killer's Disturbing Focus on His Own Son
Throughout the interrogation, Horner repeatedly expressed anguish over the impact of his incarceration on his son's life. He begged police to "shoot him" and lamented, "I'm going to miss out on all my son's Christmases, his birthdays, and growing up. I'm going to miss out on everything." Horner attributed his actions to listening to "some stupid voice that isn't probably even there," highlighting his mental state during the crime.
Detectives attempted to console him, with one officer saying, "This is something that can be overcome" and assuring Horner he would be okay. However, Horner cut him off, insisting, "This isn't one of those probation things. This is one of those I'm going away for a long time things, and I'm going to miss out on all of my f*****g son's life. I would rather die."
Brutal Details of the November 2022 Murder
The crime unfolded on November 30, 2022, in Paradise, Texas, when Horner delivered a box of Barbies intended as a Christmas present to the Strand residence. Horner claimed he accidentally struck Athena with his delivery truck, then panicked and placed her in his vehicle. He told police he strangled her in his truck, with her final moments captured by a microphone after he covered an internal camera.
Wise County District Attorney James Stainton warned jurors they would hear horrific audio evidence, stating, "You are going to hear what a 250lb man can do to a 67lb child. And when I say it's horrible, I mean it." Horner allegedly warned Athena, "Don't scream or I'll hurt you," as he abducted her.
Legal Proceedings and Defense Arguments
Horner pleaded guilty to capital murder of a child under ten and aggravated kidnapping on Tuesday, just before his trial was set to begin. He now faces a punishment trial where a jury will decide between life imprisonment or the death penalty. Athena's mother, Maitlyn Gandy, has publicly supported the death penalty for her daughter's killer.
Defense attorney Steven Goble acknowledged the "overwhelming" evidence against Horner but pointed to mitigating factors. He cited Horner's autism, exposure to lead during childhood—with levels 24 times normal in his bones—and various mental illnesses. Goble argued, "When someone's brain is what's injured, you don't see it," and requested a life sentence instead of death.
The trial resumes today, with jurors expected to endure further graphic evidence as they deliberate on an appropriate punishment for this heinous crime.
