Four Arrested in Kenya Over Scottish Businessman's Murder

Four men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Scottish businessman whose body was discovered dumped in a sack of pineapples in Kenya. Campbell Scott, 58, from Dunfermline in Fife, vanished from the Kenyan capital of Nairobi last year while attending a work conference.

Discovery in Makongo Forest

Mr Scott's body was found by local herders in the Makongo Forest, approximately 60 miles from Nairobi. His hands and feet were tied to a sack of pineapples, indicating a brutal and unusual disposal method. The discovery shocked both local communities and international observers.

Intelligence-Led Operation

Detectives in Kenya confirmed that the four suspects were apprehended following an intelligence-led, multi-agency operation in the coastal town of Ukunda. This operation was part of a broader investigation into violent crimes in the region.

The arrests come after a separate probe into a violent robbery involving an American national in Nyali, a residential area within Mombasa City. Authorities believe there may be connections between these incidents and other criminal activities.

Background of the Victim

Campbell Scott was a senior director at the credit scoring firm FICO. Prior to his disappearance, he was scheduled to attend a three-day workshop with senior officials from the UK, US, and several African countries to discuss markets for new products.

He was reported missing after failing to meet colleagues for a presentation at the JW Marriott Hotel in Nairobi's Westlands area. It is known that he visited the Havana nightclub the evening before his disappearance.

Suspected Abduction

Investigators suspect that Mr Scott was taken to a property in a slum area known as the Pipeline district, which is about 1.3 miles from his hotel. His body was later recovered in the Makongo Forest, still bound to the pineapple sack.

A post-mortem examination of his body was inconclusive. However, pathologists noted that Mr Scott's injuries were too minor to have caused his death, leaving the exact cause of death unclear and adding to the mystery of the case.

Previous Arrests and Suspect Death

In March last year, two men believed to be among the last to see Mr Scott alive were arrested. Following this, officers launched an appeal to find three further suspects.

One of these suspects, Samuel Musembi, later stabbed himself to death while on the run from police. Musembi had initially attempted to poison himself and was hiding at a friend's house, where the friend was unaware of his actions. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

Latest Developments

In a statement, Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the latest suspects are linked to Mr Scott's murder and other violent robberies. The suspects have been identified as Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki, and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge.

They were apprehended at Ideal Apartments in Ukunda. A search of the residence led to the recovery of stolen items, including an HP laptop, mobile phones, assorted foreign currencies, multiple credit cards, cheque books from various banks, and PDQ card reader machines.

The DCI also stated that the suspects have been forensically linked to another robbery with violence incident in Watamu, Malindi Sub-County, highlighting their alleged involvement in a series of crimes.
