Tragedy Strikes Texas Family as Teen Driver Crashes into Home

A devastating incident in Stephenville, Texas, has left a family shattered after a teenage driver crashed a car into their home, resulting in the deaths of a mother and her young son. The victims, identified as 49-year-old Barbara Rocha and her seven-year-old son Alex, were asleep in their residence when the crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Fatal Collision and Immediate Aftermath

According to local authorities, 18-year-old Gracie Yates lost control of her vehicle, which plowed into the Rocha family home. Both Barbara and Alex were found in critical condition and were rushed to Texas Health Resources Stephenville hospital. Despite extensive life-saving efforts by medical personnel, they succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead.

Yates has since been arrested and charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide. Her bond for both charges has been set at $29,000. Officials have not yet confirmed whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, leaving the investigation ongoing.

Family's Heartbreaking Account

The Rocha family is grappling with an unimaginable loss. Barbara is survived by her husband of 31 years, Alfredo Rocha Sr., and five other children. Their daughter Anna, who was in the same room as her mother and brother at the time of the crash, miraculously survived with injuries.

One of Barbara's sons, who was inside the house during the incident, recounted the harrowing moments to his brother Raul. Raul, who learned of the tragedy while at his home in Bonham, shared the emotional details with Fox 4.

"All I remember is I heard a crash. I went in the room and all you could hear was my little brother screaming and my mom praying," Raul said. "And that's what I have stuck in the back of my head right now my little brother screaming, and my mom praying."

He expressed profound grief, stating, "I never imagined this to happen to me. I never imagined losing my mom. My mom does not deserve this. She was so sweet. She always cared about us. She cared about anybody around her." Raul added, "And then, my brother… I won’t be able to see him grow up. The thing I’m going to miss, whenever I go visit, he comes up and hugs me and says, 'I missed you.' I’m never going to get that again."

Remembering Barbara and Alex

Barbara Rocha, who was born in Mexico, was celebrated for her passion for cooking. Her obituary highlighted that "whether at work or at home, her cooking was an expression of her love, and her happiest moments were those spent surrounding her husband and children with warmth and care." She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a regular at the casual restaurant Purple Goat.

Alex, born in Fort Worth, was remembered for his "bright and creative soul" and described as a "gifted young artist who loved to draw, filling his days with color and imagination." His obituary noted, "Known for his adventurous and carefree spirit, Alex was happiest when he was barefoot, feeling the ground beneath his feet as he explored. His laughter and creativity brought a special light to his family’s home that will never be forgotten."

Community Support and Clarifications

In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses and necessary repairs to their severely damaged home. The fundraiser also emphasized that the family urgently requires temporary housing as they navigate this difficult period.

Amidst the confusion, a Texas-based singer-songwriter named Gracie Yates posted a video on Facebook to clarify that she was not the driver involved in the crash, highlighting the shared name with the suspect.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Barbara and Alex, while the Rocha family seeks solace and support during this heartbreaking time.
